But I don't have *space* for a makerspace!

3D printers may be the “killer app” of the makerspace and they definitely
have the “wow factor” that might justify the cost, but if your library is
anything like many of the libraries I’ve worked for, it may not matter how
useful a 3D printer is because the money’s just not there. Or maybe it is,
but you aren’t sure if there’s enough interest in your community to warrant
spending the money. In the latter case, you might be able to, say, borrow a
printer from SWON and give it a test-drive

in your community, but that’s not the only way!

3D printers are, ultimately, a tool, just like a hammer and a nail. Okay,
maybe more like a jigsaw or perhaps a lathe… but the point is, you use them
to make things. That’s the “make” in makerspace! And you can definitely
“make” without one. Do you think of a sewing machine as part of a
makerspace? Cincinnati Public Library’s Makerspace has one

A button maker is cheap and always popular. How many of you already have
Ellison or AccuCut die-cut machines? Can you put them out for the public?

is a more affordable option than a 3D printer, and produces a lot of bang
for your buck. Then there’s the little things: paper cutters, scanners,
cheap cameras, moldable plastics, Sugru…

Making isn’t, ultimately, about having the biggest, baddest equipment.
Making is about creating. And I bet many of you are doing that in your
