Civility Goes Viral: A New Approach for a New Era

Tuesday, April 18, 2017 ♦ 3:00 pm Eastern / 12:00 pm Pacific ♦ 1 hour

Registration: http://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/civility-goes-viral.html<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.webjunction.org%2Fevents%2Fwebjunction%2Fcivility-goes-viral.html&data=01%7C01%7Cmarshams%40library.ohio.gov%7Ce0a5fadcc61a47995b1808d481c7f3f0%7C50f8fcc494d84f0784eb36ed57c7c8a2%7C0&sdata=cj%2FhDJ1waMRula2kxFXhzjjhlJArapgtu2mEE4Qn8kI%3D&reserved=0>

To "choose civility" means to celebrate diversity and choose respect, compassion, empathy, and inclusiveness when interacting with others. Civility is the healing power we need to counteract the divisive, fragmented forces that seem to be undermining our social fabric. Since 2006, Howard County Library System (MD) has been leading the way toward community connectedness with their Choose Civility<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fchoosecivility.org%2F&data=01%7C01%7Cmarshams%40library.ohio.gov%7Ce0a5fadcc61a47995b1808d481c7f3f0%7C50f8fcc494d84f0784eb36ed57c7c8a2%7C0&sdata=m%2FbIHDE6NDCrhWv3GTrXNRi%2BluVL0nPREMkLb8fh97s%3D&reserved=0> initiative. They, along with three library systems across the country, invite you to join the movement to nurture civility in your own community. Learn how kindness creates communities, how to challenge stereotypes effectively, and cultivate random acts of civility. Find opportunities to implement Choose Civility to enhance internal and external customer service, develop partnerships and community support, and create a more connected community of people who will #choose2Bkind. Let’s see civility go viral in 2017.

Beyond the Welcome Sign: Tailoring Immigrant Services for Success

Thursday, May 11, 2017 ♦ 3:00 pm Eastern / 12:00 pm Pacific ♦ 1 hour

Registration: http://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/tailoring-immigrant-services.html<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.webjunction.org%2Fevents%2Fwebjunction%2Ftailoring-immigrant-services.html&data=01%7C01%7Cmarshams%40library.ohio.gov%7Ce0a5fadcc61a47995b1808d481c7f3f0%7C50f8fcc494d84f0784eb36ed57c7c8a2%7C0&sdata=6JIrtrcMCXuz%2B4GKFWePzNAv7G8OG27%2B8AFHvs8v7jc%3D&reserved=0>

There is much more to supporting immigrants and refugees than hanging out a "welcome" sign at your library. Successful programs and services are specifically tailored to meet the needs of the range of populations who may come through your doors. Hear from Movers & Shakers who work with communities to empower vulnerable and often underserved populations with a sense of belonging and self-reliance. Learn innovative approaches to identifying and celebrating immigrant leaders; how to foster networking between native-born and newcomer populations and between immigrant groups of varying national origins; how to highlight immigrant-positive narratives; and more. You'll be sure to find practical ideas among the multi-pronged strategies that these librarians have used to ensure that new immigrants really do feel welcomed by the library and the community.

This webinar is part of a series highlighting the work of recent LJ Movers & Shakers and is hosted in collaboration with Library Journal<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Flj.libraryjournal.com%2F&data=01%7C01%7Cmarshams%40library.ohio.gov%7Ce0a5fadcc61a47995b1808d481c7f3f0%7C50f8fcc494d84f0784eb36ed57c7c8a2%7C0&sdata=HB1g535SkK7OsIlx92PXx1XbtuSmEabJPK5Bklk9fSs%3D&reserved=0>.

Presented by: Will Chan, Program Administrator, New Americans Project, Denver Public Library and 2016 Mover & Shaker; and Sophie Maier, Immigrant Services Librarian, Louisville Free Public Library, and 2017 Mover & Shaker.
