[OPLINLIST] Special Needs Patron

Susan,

Our library offers one-on-one appointments, so if we get a walk-in and the issue is taking longer than 1/2 hr. - 1 hr. we recommend they schedule an appointment. There is a one-hour limit on appointments. If we can't get everything done in the hour, they can schedule another time. This way the time staff have to take to help the patron has already been set aside for helping and it's not taking them away from other duties.

Hope this helps.

Hello All:
We serve a rural population of about 19.5K through our main library, three
branches and one bookmobile. The immediate service area of the main library
is less than 4K. One of our regular patrons has a special need. She is
hearing impaired and tries to communicate with loud mono-syllabic sounds.
We welcomed her over a decade ago, helping her acquire a library card,
providing referrals as she needed, and developed our own communication
technique. Lately, however, I see a team member spending hours sitting by
her actually typing for her, or in the latest case, trying to log in to her
new tablet device. There was an error on some end and even my tech guru
could not figure it out.

We suggested she take it back home and charge it fully and we will try
again.

Question: With a very small and limited staff, how long do you sit with any
patron and help them with (fill in the blank) before you simply cannot help
anymore? We try to refer, but she keeps insisting because she has a rapport
with us. My team is kindhearted and do not say they can't help her, but I
see them sitting an hour or two by her side with nothing being accomplished.

Their supervisor has informed them not to spend so much time, help her and
then tell her frankly, that is all they can do, and walk away. She does not
take advice about other avenues of help.

I know this is a convoluted way of asking, but I'm just interested in new
phraseology or practices when you have a persistent "needy" patron (I hate
how that sounds).

Thanks in advance,
Susan

Please excuse multiple postings...

The State Library of Ohio is seeking nominations for appointment to a five-year term on the State Library Board. Ms. Krista Taracuk of Columbus will complete her first five-year term on December 31, 2017. The successful appointee will serve January 1, 2018 -December 31, 2022.

The nominated candidate should have experience in at least one of the following areas:

* As a board member or an employee of a public organization or institution.
* As a board member or former employee of a school, public, academic or specialized library.
* In the development of equal access to information for all Ohio residents.
* Changing technologies and their impact on libraries.

The State Library Board consists of five members appointed by the State Board of Education. The Board typically meets six times a year beginning in January. The upcoming schedule can be found here: library.ohio.gov/about/state-librarian-board/#panel-schedule<https://staging.statelibrary.local/about/state-librarian-board/#panel-schedule>. For information on the specific powers and duties of the State Library Board, please see Section 3375.01<http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/3375> of the Ohio Revised Code. The Board will evaluate candidates' diversity, geographic locations, and relevant experience and forward candidates' information along with a recommendation to be considered for appointment by the State Board of Education.

Current State Library Board members are:
Krista Taracuk, President, of Columbus (term ends 12/31/17)
Laurie Gemmill Arp, of Columbus (term ends 12/31/18)
Melissa Hendon Deters, of Mason (term ends 12/31/19)
Michael Merz, of Dayton (term ends 12/31/2020)
Dr. Tracy Najera, of Columbus (term ends 12/31/2021)

Current or past board members or former employees of school, public, academic or special libraries will be given first consideration for nomination. However, it should be noted that a person cannot serve on a public library board and on the State Library Board concurrently.

The State Library Board has identified the following top strategic goals for the agency:

Goal 1: Support digitization efforts to widen access to the State Library of Ohio's collection and increase resource sharing throughout the state

Goal 2: Position the State Library of Ohio to state government as the preferred channel for information

Goal 3: Brand the State Library of Ohio to reflect its promise to stakeholders for "A Smarter Ohio"

Goal 4: Expand access to resources in cost efficient ways through electronic channels

Goal 5: Lead innovation and development efforts for libraries to ensure ongoing relevance to communities across Ohio

Please complete and return the attached State Library Board Nomination Form<https://library.ohio.gov/documents/state-library-board-nomination-form/>, plus any supporting information such as a resume or curriculum vitae and letters of support, by September 29, 2017 to:
