The State Library of Ohio is pleased to announce that the State Library Board awarded $151,748 in federal Institute of Museum and Library Services Library Services (IMLS) and Technology Act (LSTA) grants on December 12, 2017 to five libraries. "The State Library Board was pleased by the quality of these grant proposals, as well as the innovative ways these libraries will use the funds to reach underserved segments of their communities," expressed State Librarian Beverly Cain. "Combined, these initiatives will reach preschool children to adults, including those on the autism spectrum, using a broad range of programs and technology that includes AWE Learning Early Literacy Stations, maker programming kits, an offsite Book Box, a Laptop Anytime Kiosk, and sensory space, equipment, and programming."

Three libraries were awarded Ohio LSTA Outreach and Partnership Grants: Cleveland Public Library, Louisville Public Library, and the Public Library of Cincinnati & Hamilton County. The purpose of the Outreach and Partnership Grant is to assist libraries in providing new and innovative ways of providing services to users and potential users, and assist in reaching individuals at a range of locations and through a variety of methods.

Mechanicsburg Public Library was awarded an Ohio LSTA Literacy Grant. The purpose of the Literacy Grant is to support the library's role in the learning experience where literacy is defined as the ability to read, write, and interact across a range of platforms and tools, and encompasses early literacy, digital literacy, functional literacy, and others.

Washington-Centerville Public Library was awarded an Ohio LSTA STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Grant. The purpose of the STEM, or STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) Grant is to assist libraries in preparing youth to be active learners and provide youth who will be the workforce of tomorrow with a competitive edge in a globalized, high-tech marketplace.

The awarded grants include:

Cleveland Public Library
Cleveland Public Library (CPL), in partnership with Cleveland State University, intends to open a new Book Box at Cleveland's Edgewater Live summer concert series. The Book Box is a mobile library unit that will increase visibility and awareness of the CPL while offering families convenient access to their favorite library materials and programming. Award: $50,000.

Louisville Public Library
Louisville Public Library (LPL) intends to create a Sensory Strategy Program (SSP) at the library that will serve/benefit the special needs community. Those of any age, with mental and/or developmental (including autism spectrum disorders) disabilities are the special needs community that LPL hopes to serve. The purpose of the SSP is to create a multisensory environment and provide programming for those with special needs. The programs consist of calming, sensory ingredients and themes. LPL will create a model, easily replicable allowing a library to provide this innovative service to the under-served, special needs community. Award: $50,000.

Public Library of Cincinnati & Hamilton County
Public Library of Cincinnati & Hamilton County (PLCHC) intends to provide a Laptop Anytime Kiosk equipped with 12 laptops for in-building use to the Carnegie Center of Columbia Tusculum. PLCHC also intends to provide a deposit collection of books rotated every other month to the Carnegie Center, as well as regular monthly technology training and programming in the summer months. Award: $28,670.

Mechanicsburg Public Library
Mechanicsburg Public Library (MPL) intends to address the issue of early literacy in the public library by purchasing two AWE Learning Early Literacy Stations for the purpose of helping local children excel in school. MPL currently has few resources available that address early literacy. There are also few resources available locally that families can access to help their children prepare for and excel in school. The AWE Learning Early Literacy Stations offer a wide range of educational programs that cover almost every subject to help children understand what they are learning, or will learn, in school. The hopeful outcome is that children will feel more prepared for school and will excel in the classroom. Award: $6,833.

Washington-Centerville Public Library
Washington-Centerville Public Library (WCPL) intends to create a community of learners by providing the equipment, tools, and knowledge to allow patrons to interact with technology through maker programs. These instructional programs will allow WCPL to offer an engaging and empowering learning experience. With a variety of equipment available, the patrons will learn to create, gain the fundamentals of circuitry, and experiment with robotics. By having this equipment in portable kits, the programs will be offered at both Centerville and Woodbourne Libraries, making participation more accessible to those throughout the Washington-Centerville community. Award: $9,412.
