The Athens County Public Libraries seek a full time (35 hours per week)
Assistant Director. This position is responsible for library operations in
the absence of the Director; supervises branch and department managers in
the delivery of library services to the public; plans and the hiring,
supervision, and training of managers and staff; creates and guides
continuing education opportunities for library staff; and initiates and
maintains effective relationships with community organizations that partner
with the library.

Athens County is known for its scenic beauty, and features a national
forest, state parks, and a 19-mile paved recreation path that connects the
cities of Athens and Nelsonville. Recreation opportunities abound,
including hiking, bicycling, boating, fishing, camping, hunting, and
canoeing on the Hocking River and surrounding lakes. The city of Athens is
a vibrant and progressive “rural-cosmopolitan” community of 25,000 located
approximately 75 miles from Columbus, Ohio, the state's capital. It is home
to Ohio University, a state university of over 20,000 students from every
state in the nation and about 100 other countries, offering undergraduate,
graduate and doctoral degrees, as well as a four-year program in
osteopathic medicine. The city of Nelsonville features Stuart’s Opera
House, a premier venue for music and the performing arts, as well as the
annual Nelsonville Music Festival. The village of Albany hosts the annual
Paw Paw Festival, a fun-filled and educational community event celebrating
one of America’s largest native tree fruits. The area also hosts a wide
variety of arts and cultural events year-round and many unique restaurants,
wineries, and breweries.

The Public Library for the City of Nelsonville and Athens County was
organized on June 1, 1935 as a school district library. Initially, the
library served only residents of the county who traveled to Nelsonville to
borrow books. In February 1938, a bookmobile was purchased and that same
year library branches were opened in Chauncey and Glouster. By the end of
1939, the library system had grown to three libraries and five deposit
stations. The Athens branch was established in 1940. In 1974, the Wells
library, which had been established in 1866 by money contributed by Henry
Wells for the Albany community, joined the county’s library system. The
next branch additions came in 1990 in Coolville and in 1991 in The Plains,
bringing the system to its current size of seven public libraries in Athens
County.

Candidates must have an MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited institution and
5 years of progressively responsible professional experience in a library,
including supervisory experience. Salary begins at $27.50 per hour and is
negotiable depending on qualifications. For a complete job description
