A Note from the Executive Director
[https://myneotoday.org/photos/35223_01302017091627.jpg]This year we had 10 people in our region nominated for the 2019 NEO-RLS Rising Star Award! The award is given to an individual who has worked in libraries less than 5 years but is already making a huge impact. Beverly Cain, State Librarian of Ohio, judges the nominations, selecting three finalists and the winner. This year Beverly said that the pool of nominees was outstanding with every one of them making a noticeable difference in their library and community. Finalists will be recognized at our annual Membership Meeting & Appreciation Breakfast <https://mms.neo-rls.org/Calendar/moreinfo.php?eventid=53282> where the winner will be announced. However, I wanted to give you a sneak peek. The top three finalists for 2019 are Angelica (Angie) George, a Youth Associate at the Heights Libraries; Tabitha Johnson, Branch Supervisor of the Tuscarawas Branch, Tuscarawas County Public Library System; and Kalyn Kappelman, Training and Special Projects Coordinator at Reed Memorial Library (recently began as Branch Services Librarian – Generalist at the Warrensville Heights Branch, Cuyahoga County Public Library). We congratulate the finalists and other nominees and applaud their commitment to their positions, their libraries and their communities. We also thank those who nurtured the nominees, recognizing their creativity, passion, and results, and taking the time to share that with us. We are excited and humbled to be a part of a larger library community filled with such talent and commitment at every level. Congratulations finalists!

Louise Seaman Bechtel Fellowship
Ever have an itch for deepening your knowledge of historic children’s literature? Would you like to get lost in the stacks scratching this itch? Would you like to do this scholarly reading, researching, and writing in sunny Florida in 2020? If this describes you, the time is right to apply for the Louise Seaman Bechtel Fellowship.

The Louise Seaman Bechtel Fellowship provides a grant up to $4,000 to a qualified children’s librarian to spend up to four weeks reading and studying at the Baldwin Library of Historical Children's Literature of the George A. Smathers Libraries, University of Florida, Gainesville. The Baldwin Library contains a special collection of 130,000 volumes of children’s literature published mostly before 1950. The fellowship is endowed in memory of Louise Seaman Bechtel and Ruth M. Baldwin.

The guidelines for the grant and link to apply are found here<http://www.ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants/profawards/bechtel> . Remember, applicants must be members of ALSC. Applications and supporting materials are due by October 15, 2019.
