*Thanks to OPLIN's Infrastructure Specialist, Jessica Dooley for these
great tips!*
*OPLIN will periodically publish these mini how-to guides.*

A common issue we run into, especially when working with libraries on their
websites, is that the library might not have access any more to the
library's domain registrar. So, if your library bought a special domain
name (e.g., "examplelibrary.org"), your organization might have trouble
later if the person who had the login information for the domain seller
leaves your library. *Here are some best practices to help prevent that
situation:*

   - Make sure the email address used to register the account isn't also
paid for by the same account. Also, make sure the email messages from the
domain registrar go to more than one staff member, or to a library alias
   email.
   - Put the email credentials and provider credentials in sealed envelopes
in multiple places (including filing where no one cleans out, for fear of
   auditors)
   - Make renewal calendar reminders for as many years as your preferred
   calendar services allows
   - Only buy 1 year terms for your domains, so renewals hopefully never
pass out of all existing staff memory. Being forced to renew annually can
prevent a lot of this kind of problem!
