The Buckeye Children's Book Award Council is pleased to announce the nominees for the 2021 Buckeye Children's Book Award and the 2021 Buckeye Teen Book Award.


The following titles were chosen in an online nomination process by young readers across the state of Ohio.


For Grades K-2

  *   Birdsong by Julie Flett (Greystone Kids, 2019)
  *   Happy Narwhalidays (A Narwhal and Jelly Book #5) by Ben Clanton (Tundra Books, 2020)
  *   The Cat Man of Aleppo by Irene Latham and Karim Shamsi-Basha; illustrated by Yuko Shimizu (G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers, 2020)
  *   This Is Not That Kind of Book by Christopher Healy; illustrated by Ben Mantle (Random House Books for Young Readers, 2019)
  *   Unstoppable by Adam Rex; illustrated by Laura Park (Chronicle Books, 2020)


For Grades 3-5

  *   Dog Man: Grime and Punishment (Dog Man #9) by Dav Pilkey (Graphix, 2020)
  *   Elbow Grease: Fast Friends by John Cena; illustrated by Howard McWilliam (Random House Books for Young Readers, 2020)
  *   Fly Girl Fly!: Shaesta Waiz Soars around the World by Nancy Roe Pimm; illustrated by Alexandra Bye (Beaming Books, 2020)
  *   I Survived the California Wildfires, 2018 by Lauren Tarshis (Scholastic, Inc., 2020)
  *   The One and Only Bob by Katherine Applegate (HarperCollins, 2020)


For Grades 6-8

The Teen Buckeye Book Award nominees (for grades 9-12)

  *   Be Not Far From Me by Mindy McGinnis (Katherine Tegen Books, 2020)
  *   Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo (Quill Tree Books, 2020)
  *   The Girl in the White Van by April Henry (Henry Holt and Co. BYR, 2020)
  *   The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, 2020)
  *   The Invincible Summer of Juniper Jones by Daven McQueen (Wattpad Books, 2020)


To be eligible for nomination for the 2021 award, a book must have been published in the United States in the previous two years.  Voting is open to any student in Ohio, and will begin on September 1, 2021 on the Buckeye Children's and Teen Book Award (BCTBA) website: www.bcbookaward.info<http://www.bcbookaward.info>.  Voting ends on November 10, 2021, and the winners will be announced after December 1, 2021.  Nominations for the 2022 awards are being accepted at the same website, all summer long. Ohio's reader's choice book award is notable among other state book award programs in that the nominated and winning titles are entirely selected by the state's children and teens.


The Buckeye Children's and Teen Book Award Council is pleased to continue our partnership with TeachingBooks.net TeachingBooks.net, the professional tool for educators, will be providing free access for teachers and librarians to multimedia resources on the Buckeye-nominated books, from author interviews to literacy connections and lesson plans. Together our organizations will continue to promote the love of reading among Ohio's children and teens.
