A Note from the Executive Director
[http://neo-rls.org/photos/77535_07122021102302.jpg]As I mentioned a few weeks ago, 134 people responded to our recent 2021 Membership Survey with 79 respondents completing the survey in full. In that first newsletter Note, I provided more information on volunteering for our Board Committees. Today I would like to talk about what you, as a member, can do to help us construct a meaningful program calendar geared toward serving your needs and interests. Oftentimes, we receive a lot of contradictory information from our surveys. For instance, for every survey respondent that said we were offering too much on diversity, equity and inclusion, there was someone who said we needed to offer more. For every respondent that said the programming was redundant, there was someone that said it was timely and needed. This contradictory information is not surprising as we serve the needs of an incredibly diverse and engaged constituency, one that keeps us on our toes. We are always looking at the balance of programs and try, within our yearly cycle, to hit the right mix of new and old, basic and advanced, specific and general, management and all staff. In addition, under the current circumstances, we try to remember that there are lots of new library employees who need lots of what others might consider "the same old, same old."

The State Library of Ohio is pleased to announce the fall training dates for Reimaging School Readiness. Registration is now open for the September 14 training date!

Do you wonder what research really says about how to support school readiness?
The is a suite of research-backed resources created for library staff to help families prepare children ages birth to 8 years for success in school and in life.
The Ohio Statewide Family Engagement Center has just released an updated research brief, " Partnering with Families for Early Language and Literacy ," which draws from the research literature on effective family engagement in early literacy instruction. It is intended for early childhood teachers who want to improve the way they partner with families for children's language and literacy development.
The inaugural BCALA Children and Youth Literary Awards honor phenomenal works of fiction and nonfiction by Black authors. Established by the Black Caucus of the American Library Association, Inc. (BCALA) and School Library Journal , the awards highlight the diversity of the Black experience and recognize authors and books that provide windows, mirrors, and sliding doors for our children to feel and be seen in their schools, libraries, and broader communities.
