Public libraries consistently top the rankings compiled by Thomas Hennen, garner high scores on the Library Journal Index of Library Service, and win prestigious awards. For example, the Columbus Metropolitan Library was selected as the Gale Cengage Library of the Year in 2010. August 2011 State Librarian's Report Beverly Cain State Librarian Feature Articles A Recipe for a Successful National Library Week We spiced up our annual National Library Week (ALA) events this year at Franklin University to lure students and faculty into the library. Attendance for promotional events tends to be thin in academic libraries so we decided to get creative. All of our speakers volunteered their time so we were able to devote our very small budget to food and drawing prizes. Public Services Librarian, Carmen Byg, coordinated our efforts by managing an ad hoc committee with short, frequent meetings over several weeks which addressed specific decisions and responsibilities. So when Jennifer Reis, then the youth services librarian, and Lisa Ebert, the adult services librarian at Cardington-Lincoln Public Library, contacted me about collaboration on an LSTA Choose to Read Ohio grant, I jumped at the chance. When artists, collectors and organizations set up displays at the Westerville Public Library, they want to catch the eye of library visitors as well as create a feeling of involvement. With more than sixty displays booked each year, the community is using its library to impact audiences of every age and interest.
