<html><body><div style="color:#000; background-color:#fff; font-family:times new roman, new york, times, serif;font-size:12pt"><div><span>Good Evening,</span></div><div><span></span> </div><div><span>I have done multiple Teen Scavenger Hunts and they usually take on 1 of 2 formats.</span></div><div><span></span> </div><div><span>The first is more of a Library Bootcamp approach, outlined here <a href="http://www.teenlibrariantoolbox.com/2011/07/library-boot-camp.html">http://www.teenlibrariantoolbox.com/2011/07/library-boot-camp.html</a></span></div><div><span></span> </div><div><span>The second is to simply put together a 20 question "contest" sheet where you have teens look information up, bring back certain types of materials, etc. I believe there is an example questionairre here <a
href="http://www.teenlibrariantoolbox.com/2012/01/contests-everyone-is-winning.html">http://www.teenlibrariantoolbox.com/2012/01/contests-everyone-is-winning.html</a></span></div><div><span>I usually did a Pizza Party/Scavenger Hunt as a quarterly event, always changing the questions. I even did them with things like The Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, etc.</span></div><div><span></span> </div><div><span>I always informed the staff before they were about to take place and reminded them not to give any answers or help teens find the answers, this is sometimes difficult for the reference staff. I also put signs on the front doors letting patrons know that teens were engaged in an activity designed to help them learn to use the library and that there may be some noise for a few minutes.</span></div><div><span></span> </div><div><span>My instructions to the teens were this:</span></div><div><span>You have 20
minutes</span></div><div><span>First one back with all the correct answers wins</span></div><div><span>Do not move any items that may be necessary to answer a question</span></div><div><span>No running, yelling, kicking, spitting, hitting, punching, tripping, etc.</span></div><div><span>Please do not interrupt staff if they are helping a patron</span></div><div><span></span> </div><div><span>Some of the questions I used included:</span></div><div><span>Looking things up on the PAC to get author, title, or the number of items we held on a certin subject</span></div><div><span>What book is Bella holding on the Twilight read poster?</span></div><div><span>Name a cartoon character on the cover of the Encylopedia of comics in the ref area</span></div><div><span>If a book is fiction is it true or made up?</span></div><div><span>How many public internet computers does the library have</span></div><div><span>Bring back a graphic novel with a superhero in
it. All steps are designed to help teens learn what is in a library (thesaurus, cookbooks, graphic novels, AAC players etc). I'd like to have the kids use the hold system so they know we can get books from anywhere, but am not sure how to do it.
