How many times have you updated your LinkedIn account this month? Not
sure why you would? Because LinkedIn is one of the few places on the web
where you get to tell your story as a professional, and that’s a story
worth telling.

When you Google yourself, what’s the top result? What’s the first
story you find? What’s the first picture? Companies use searches and
social media platforms to learn about potential employees. Whether or
not you’re actively engaged in a job search, people can learn about you
from your blog or Twitter account. Yes, your Facebook account, too. At
LinkedIn, you can put the profile you write at the top of those search
results.

LinkedIn isn’t just for job-seekers. You want your peers to be able
to find you, too, whether they’re local or far away. Whatever your
library role, there are others who are working on similar tasks, with
similar constraints. Share what you do and how you work, and you might
find people turning to you for ideas. That works both ways; building a
network of colleagues creates a stream of incoming ideas and of
potential help when you have questions:

Who are the catalogers around you that are using RDA? Who are the
Teen Services librarians who are using tech in interesting ways? Who’s
in the know about Overdrive and ebook-reading devices? Who’s making
connections to community businesses and organizations? LinkedIn can help
you find those people or be found if you’re one of them.

If you want to use LinkedIn but don’t know where to start, what
should you do? Come to the LinkedIn Level-Up Lab. Melanie’s read the
books on LinkedIn. She can tell you how to improve your profile and how
much time it will take. She’ll explain different ways you can connect
with others and keep your page current, and you’ll have time to log into
your account during the class and get started.

You don’t have to use LinkedIn to tell your professional story. But
if you’re interested in describing your professional experience, give
your account a level up at the LinkedIn Lab, July 11th from 2-4 p.m.
