<p>On Sunday, President Barack Obama will release a special video message to ALA Conference attendees thanking libraries for helping Americans enroll for health insurance as part of the Affordable Care Act.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p>The special message from the White House will air on Sunday, June 30, 2013, at 8:30a.m. in the McCormick Convention Center, room South 100C. President Obama will discuss ways that libraries will serve as a place where consumers can seek information about
and enroll in the health insurance marketplace that will begin October 1, 2013.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p>Shortly after the video announcement, the ALA Washington Office will team up with several organizations and government agencies to host “Libraries & Health Insurance: Preparing for October 1,” a session that will teach library leaders how to serve patrons
with the new Affordable Care Act program. The session will be held on Sunday, June 30, 2013, from 1:00–2:30p.m. in McCormick Place Convention Center room S501BCD.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p>Today, Maureen Sullivan, president of the American Library Association, announced the launch of

Authors for Library Ebooks</a>, a new initiative that asks authors to stand with libraries in their quest for equitable access to e-books. Bestselling authors Cory Doctorow, Ursula K. Le Guin and Jodi Picoult are helping kick off the campaign.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p>The campaign represents an extension of the ALA's advocacy strategy to ensure all people have access to the world's knowledge and literature through our nation's libraries--regardless of format. Over the past 18 months, ALA leaders have met with major publishers,
distributors, authors and representative associations to seek sustainable solutions for library e-book lending.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p>In an exciting turnaround, last night the World Intellectual Property Assembly (WIPO) made history by passing the "Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works by Visually Impaired and Persons with Print Disabilities (the "Treaty for the Blind"). Print
disabled people and supporters of the treaty around the world are thrilled by the victory, including the American Library Association.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p>After five years of advocacy and negotiations, WIPO achieved the unthinkable--they passed a treaty in support of the information rights of users! By passing what is an exception to copyright, WIPO demonstrated that there is international support for balance
in copyright law.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p>Today, the American Library Association joined <a href="http://capwiz.com/ala/utr/1/AULNTEYMIW/NBEZTEYMKH/9716852231">
38 other companies</a> and civil liberties organizations to urge the Senate to protect Americans' privacy when drafting new cybersecurity legislation. The coalition letter submitted to Congress by the group asks that new cybersecurity information sharing legislation
maintains the privacy protections from the Cybersecurity Act of 2012 (S.3414).<o:p></o:p></p>
