<p>Lee Rainie, Director of the Pew Research Center’s Internet &
American Life Project, spoke at the Internet Librarian conference
yesterday. I wasn’t there, but I read the lively commentary and recaps
people posted to Twitter with the conference’s <a
href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23il2013">#IL2013</a> hash tag. </p>
<p>Pew polls the general public–library and non-library users–so their
results paint a picture libraries might not otherwise see. Though you
can’t hear his talk, you can see his <a
href="http://pewinternet.org/Presentations/2013/Oct/The-New-Library-Patron.aspx">slides</a>

<p>There are lots of take-aways from his talk. A few that struck me
most: people broadly support the library, even though they don’t know
what services libraries offer. Access to computers and the internet is
very important, but few people are eager to see bookshelves replaced by
more computers or programming space.</p>
<p>And even though smartphone, tablet and e-reader ownership has
skyrocketed, people still want introductions to and help with those
devices. The library is a place where you can be a beginner and ask
honest questions without feeling foolish. That kind of help can be very
hard to find elsewhere.</p>

<p>Since libraries of all type have such a unique role in the
communities, who can they learn from? How do they decide what services
to offer or how to market themselves? </p>
