<p>It’s easy to feel jealous when you hear a presenter talk about
their library event that brought in 300 teens, got covered on the local
news, etc. </p>
<h3 id="moneyisntthechallenge.communityrelationsis.">Money isn’t the
challenge. Community relations is.</h3>
<p>That’s the word from Krista King-Oaks and Jami Thompson, Teen
Services Librarians who are speakers at the upcoming <a
href="http://swon.evanced.info/signup/EventCalendar.aspx?df=list&et=6&kw=summer">Summer
Reading Program webinars</a>. You don’t dive straight into planning a
big event. You start by getting to know people; by listening to your
teens.</p>
<p>When you see there’s interest in a topic, start a club and schedule
regular meetings. Regular meetings are easier for patrons to attend
(and invite people to), and they don’t have to be expensive to host.
Besides being a good program, they’re a great way to build an audience
toward hosting a big event.</p>
<h3 id="recommendedreading">Recommended reading</h3>
<p>Here are two books Krista and Jami recommend for building
relationships with teens:</p>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.alastore.ala.org/detail.aspx?ID=3193">Young
Adults Deserve the Best: YALSA’s Competencies in Action</a></li><li><a
href="http://www.alastore.ala.org/detail.aspx?ID=2977">Risky Business:
Taking and Managing Risks in Library Services for Teens</a></li>
</ul>
<p>There’s risk involved in trying anything new, whether you’re
working with teens, children or adults. Listen to your community first,
and you’ve made a start toward events your patrons will love.</p>

<h2 id="thebestbooksof2013">The best books of 2013?</h2>
<p>Share your favorites from 2013 and hear what books your colleagues
enjoyed the most at SWON’s annual Best Books meeting. Bring a copy of
each books to show others. And paper. Better make it college rule, cause
your list is going to get long. The meeting is at the newly-renovated
Covington Branch of the Kenton County Public Library on January 28. <a

<h2 id="whenwillyoureadallthosebestbooks">When will you read all those
“best books”?</h2>
<p>Why not join the <a href="http://tiny.cc/trc2014">Teen Reading
Challenge</a>? A little competition could nudge you to read through that
list. Find new books you’re ready to recommend (or recommend your
library to buy) at the Challenge. It’s friendly and free. </p>
<p>For a great related resource, ask your library to buy the (Teen
Reader’s Advisory Guide](<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="https://gum.co/TeenRAGuide">https://gum.co/TeenRAGuide</a>). It’s a compilation
of all of the reviews written during last year’s Challenge. Buy a PDF (<a

email Nathan to ask about print copies: <a
