<p>Personality conflicts may be inevitable, but they don’t have to be
permanent. Bethany Nummela-Hanel gave a great keynote about Myers-Briggs
personality types at Tuesday’s Staff Training Symposium. People learned
to identify their personality type, but they also learned ways to
identify personality differences as a cause of conflict.</p>
<p>For example, every Monday morning, you ask your (introvert)
coworker, “How was your weekend?” but they never seem to have much to
say. So you fill the silence by describing your own time off in full.
Extrovert-you wants to share what’s going on and hear what’s up with
them, but your coworker starts avoiding you.</p>
<h4 id="likeplatosaidknowwhatthyselfsoundslike.">Like Plato said,
“Know what thyself sounds like.”</h4>
<p>You can both do better. Extrovert, you want to hear about your
coworker’s weekend? Ask them a question or two, and then give them time
to respond. Some silence is okay. Introvert, you don’t like a one-sided
conversation? Come up with a story to tell. Make an effort to share, and
both sides will feel better.</p>
<p>Another example: You and a coworker have been assigned to update
some signage. You very logically want to count existing signs for budget
planning, to get started. Your coworker wants to start by intuitively
asking what response you want to get from patrons and what might get
that response. Both people are asking crucial questions, but setting
them up as conflicting priorities creates unnecessary friction. </p>
<p>When there’s conflict in the workplace, it’s not enough to expect
the other person to change their behavior. You can adapt to ease the
conflict, too, and personality theory is one way that can help you find
that middle ground. To learn more, here are a few books that Bethany
