<p>Charlie Haden, a legendary jazz player, <a
href="http://www.npr.org/blogs/ablogsupreme/2014/07/11/330772721/remembering-jazz-legend-charlie-haden-who-crafted-his-voice-in-bass">recently
passed away</a>. If you walked into a local record shop to look for
some jazz, having heard some of Charlie’s music, who would you ask for
help? The kid with a punk haircut and tattoos on his neck, or the older
guy sporting a Judas Priest t-shirt and six rings? </p>
<p>You might leave without asking anyone. Why? You might say that
neither of them look like jazz fans, but a more fundamental reason might
be that neither of them looks very approachable. Neither of them (I’m
just guessing here) looks like you. That matters. That’s one of the
reasons why diversity matters. </p>
<p>Maybe they both love jazz. You’re not a mind reader. But if the
“Staff Picks” shelf had a couple jazz picks mixed in, it would give you a
reason to think they could help you. Diversity is something you can
work on, by broadening your interests and by working to welcome other
people’s interests. </p>
<p>Diversity is also something you work on by welcoming people of
different backgrounds and cultures to your staff. A diverse staff can
simply mean reflecting your community. After all, it’s tough to serve
patrons who aren’t comfortable asking you a question.</p>
