When schools were closed for safety yesterday, the library stayed open. They invited teachers and volunteers in to teach kids and <a href="https://twitter.com/fergusonlibrary/status/537273221326708736" target="_blank" data-mce-href="https://twitter.com/fergusonlibrary/status/537273221326708736">invited everyone</a> in to their safe space.</p><blockquote style="font-style: italic;" data-mce-style="font-style: italic;"><p>We are open 9–4. Wifi, water, rest, knowledge. We are here for you. If neighbors have kids, let them know teachers are here today, too.</p></blockquote><p>So many people asked how they could donate to the library, they placed a Paypal donation button on their <a href="http://ferguson.lib.mo.us" target="_blank" data-mce-href="http://ferguson.lib.mo.us">home page</a> and had by yesterday received <a href="http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/ferguson-library-donations" target="_blank" data-mce-href="http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/ferguson-library-donations">donations in the five-digits</a>. People have also bought books to donate to the library and sent in checks.</p><p>Why have over 1,200 people have donated to the library? A number of people on Twitter said they had donated because they wanted to help people in Ferguson, and donating to the library seemed a constructive way to do that. That’s why I donated. The evidence of how they’re helping is easy to find.</p><p>When people tweet in praise of the library, the library often responds with the hashtag #<strong><a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/whatlibrariesdo?src=hash" target="_blank" data-mce-href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/whatlibrariesdo?src=hash">whatlibrariesdo</a></strong>. Like many libraries, they’re doing a lot with a little. Here’s a brief <a href="http://magpielibrarian.wordpress.com/2014/09/03/an-interview-with-scott-bonner-ferguson-librarian/" target="_blank" data-mce-href="http://magpielibrarian.wordpress.com/2014/09/03/an-interview-with-scott-bonner-ferguson-librarian/">interview with Scott Bonner</a>, the director and sole full-time librarian at the library, talking about what was happening there in September. And here’s an article from <a href="http://lj.libraryjournal.com/2014/08/public-services/ferguson-libraries-step-up-to-serve-community-in-turmoil/#_" target="_blank" data-mce-href="http://lj.libraryjournal.com/2014/08/public-services/ferguson-libraries-step-up-to-serve-community-in-turmoil/#_">Library Journal</a> written in August.</p><p>We know libraries serve their communities.
