<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN"> </span>“<b><i>The Book of Unknown Americans</i></b>,” a novel by Cristina Henríquez, has been chosen as the featured book for the Findlay-Hancock County Public Library’s 2016 CommunityREAD. Henríquez will visit Hancock
County on March 11 during CommunityREAD month for a public presentation at 7 p.m. at the Marathon Center for the Performing Arts.<br>
The book tells the story of the Rivera family, who leaves a comfortable life in Mexico after their 15-year-old daughter, Maribel, sustains a serious injury. They risk everything to come to the United States so that Maribel can have the care she needs.
A romance ensues between Maribel and Mayor Toro, the son of a neighbor. Henriquez interweaves the story of the lovers, and the Rivera and Toro families, with testimonials of men and women who have come to the United States from Latin America. Henríquez is
also the author of “<i>Come Together, Fall Apart</i>,” a collection of stories, and “<i>The World in Half</i>.”<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><br>
“<b><i>The Book of Unknown Americans</i></b>” was one of the New York Times’ Notable Books of 2014 and made it onto many other best of 2014 book lists, including The Washington Post and National Public Radio. In her lectures, Henríquez, who grew up half-American,
half-Panamanian, speaks about identity and addresses common narratives about immigration. Henríquez also speaks to aspiring writers about the writer’s creative and technical process.<br>
In writing “<b><i>The Book of Unknown Americans</i></b>,” Henríquez was inspired by her father’s Panama-to-U.S. immigration story and other experiences of people in Delaware, where she grew up. The novel, which has been called “a flawlessly written book
about immigration,” brings to life the human stories behind the ongoing debate about immigration through the eyes of characters from all over Latin America.<br>
Henriquez’s work has appeared in <i>The New Yorker</i>, <i>The Wall Street Journal</i> and elsewhere and she has been a guest on National Public Radio. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and currently teaches at Northwestern
University.<br>
In addition to <i>The Book of Unknown Americans</i>, three related YouthREAD books have been selected. This year’s youth books are:
<i>Marisol McDonald Doesn’t Match</i> by Monica Brown, illustrated by Sara Palacios;
<i>The Quiet Place</i> by Sarah Stewart, illustrated by David Small; <i>Inside Out & Back</i> Again by Thanhhá Lai.<br>
<span lang="EN"> Copies of the CommunityREAD and YouthREAD books are available for loan at the Findlay-Hancock County Public Library and area school libraries. Tickets for the March 11<sup>th</sup> event are available online by visiting the Marathon Center

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN"> CommunityREAD is a month-long community event that encourages reading and promotes the benefits of literacy. Originally created by the Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation, the administration of CommunityREAD
was assumed by the Findlay-Hancock County Public Library in 2012. Each year, a different book is chosen and read by community members during the month of March. Various events are planned throughout the month at the library and throughout the community. CommunityREAD
