<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Century Gothic","sans-serif"">I recently had the opportunity to learn about the
<a href="http://nextchapterbookclub.org/">Next Chapter Book Club</a> (NCBC), which offers community-based book clubs for adolescents and adults with Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy and other intellectual and developmental disabilities.  The Next Chapter
 Book Club was founded in 2002 by Dr. Thomas Fish, Director of Social Work at The Ohio State University Nisonger Center on Disabilities.  NCBC is the largest community-based book club program of its kind in the world with more than 2,000 members attending 300
 clubs in 31 states, four Canadian provinces<span style="color:#1F497D">,</span> and three European countries.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Century Gothic","sans-serif""><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Century Gothic","sans-serif"">The founder and organizers of the Next Chapter Book Club, based at Ohio State University, hope to expand NCBC in public libraries across Ohio.  I am currently aware of two very successful
 NCBC programs in Ohio libraries.  Along with community partner<a href="http://palschrysalishealth.com/"> PALS Chrysalis Health</a>, which supports a diverse group of people with developmental disabilities, the
<a href="http://www.lickingcountylibrary.info/">Licking County Library</a> started a Next Chapter Book Club for adults over two years ago and just this year added another NCBC for teens.  The
<a href="http://www.wrightlibrary.org/">Wright Memorial Public Library</a>, in partnership with the
<a href="http://www.mvdsa.org/">Miami Valley Down Syndrome Association</a>, began a Next Chapter Book Club in January 2016.  The club quickly grew in popularity and the Library has split the original club into two groups.  The program has received some nice
 coverage in the <a href="http://www.mydaytondailynews.com/news/news/local/oakwood-book-club-serves-adults-with-developmental/nq4J8/">
Dayton Daily News</a>.  If you are already hosting a Next Chapter Book Club in your library, I’d like to hear from you.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Century Gothic","sans-serif""><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Century Gothic","sans-serif"">The Next Chapter Book Club encourages public libraries that are interested in starting a club to do so in partnership with a local social service agency or parents<span style="color:#1F497D">’</span>
 group.  NCBC provides training to librarians and a community partner who will act as club facilitators.  I know that many public libraries already have well-established partnerships with organizations in their communities that serve adolescents and adults
 with developmental disabilities.  The State Library is currently investigating the possibility of developing an LSTA grant program to assist libraries with the cost of training and materials.
