                                <p><span style="color: #333333; font-size: 1 em; font-family: verdana, arial, sans-serif; !important;"><font color="#333333" face="verdana, arial, sans-serif" size="2">If you've worked in a library for any amount of time, you probably have stories about items found on the shelf which could have been weeded long ago. Personally, I have seen examples from outdated science books (<a href="https://swonlibraries.site-ym.com/link.asp?e=oplinlist@lists.oplin.org&job=3452591&ymlink=267126530&finalurl=http%3A%2F%2Fpubliclibrariesonline%2Eorg%2F2013%2F04%2Fspring%2Dweeding%2Dprogress%2Dshould%2Dbe%2Dreflected%2Din%2Dyour%2Dcollection%2F" target="_blank">Pluto isn't a planet anymore</a>) to items that were just physically demolished in weird ways - like a book that had actual shoe prints on the inside cover and pages. In fact, there are whole <a href="https://swonlibraries.site-ym.com/link.asp?e=oplinlist@lists.oplin.org&job=3452591&ymlink=267126530&finalurl=http%3A%2F%2Fawfullibrarybooks%2Enet%2F" target="_blank">websites</a> devoted to sharing the <a href="https://swonlibraries.site-ym.com/link.asp?e=oplinlist@lists.oplin.org&job=3452591&ymlink=267126530&finalurl=http%3A%2F%2Fawfullibrarybooks%2Enet%2Fthe%2Dpurrrrfect%2Dgift%2Dfor%2Dcollectors%2F" target="_blank">silly</a>, <a href="https://swonlibraries.site-ym.com/link.asp?e=oplinlist@lists.oplin.org&job=3452591&ymlink=267126530&finalurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Esfgate%2Ecom%2Flifestyle%2Farticle%2FBacon%2Dcheese%2Dcondoms%2DWhat%2Dlibrarians%2Dfind%2Dbooks%2D12894951%2Ephp%23item%2D85307%2Dtbla%2D25" target="_blank">gross</a>, <a href="https://swonlibraries.site-ym.com/link.asp?e=oplinlist@lists.oplin.org&job=3452591&ymlink=267126530&finalurl=http%3A%2F%2Fawfullibrarybooks%2Enet%2Flaw%2Dof%2Dthe%2Dinterwebz%2F" target="_blank">outdated</a>, and sometimes <a href="https://swonlibraries.site-ym.com/link.asp?e=oplinlist@lists.oplin.org&job=3452591&ymlink=267126530&finalurl=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter%2Ecom%2Fannaholmeswrit1%2Fstatus%2F991371469807468544" target="_blank">unbelievable</a> stuff we find in our collections. Certain subjects appear more than others, like cookbooks, which range in cuisine style from <a href="https://swonlibraries.site-ym.com/link.asp?e=oplinlist@lists.oplin.org&job=3452591&ymlink=267126530&finalurl=http%3A%2F%2Fawfullibrarybooks%2Enet%2Fsalmon%2Djell%2Do%2Danyone%2F" target="_blank">aspic</a> (a form of gelatin) to, it seems, <a href="https://swonlibraries.site-ym.com/link.asp?e=oplinlist@lists.oplin.org&job=3452591&ymlink=267126530&finalurl=http%3A%2F%2Fawfullibrarybooks%2Enet%2Fgourmet%2Djell%2Do%2Drecipes%2F" target="_blank">even more Jello</a>. </font></span></p>
                                <p><span style="color: #333333; font-size: 1 em; font-family: verdana, arial, sans-serif; !important;"><font color="#333333" face="verdana, arial, sans-serif" size="2">While old Jello recipes or physically damaged books may be easy to discard, <a href="https://swonlibraries.site-ym.com/link.asp?e=oplinlist@lists.oplin.org&job=3452591&ymlink=267126530&finalurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Enpr%2Eorg%2Fseries%2Fpop%2Dculture%2Dhappy%2Dhour%2F2011%2F10%2F12%2F141265066%2Fhard%2Dchoices%2Ddo%2Dlibraries%2Dreally%2Ddestroy%2Dbooks">sometimes we have a hard time letting go of books</a>.  </font></span><span style="color: #333333; font-size: 1 em; font-family: verdana, arial, sans-serif; !important;"><font color="#333333" face="verdana, arial, sans-serif" size="2">Weeding, the withdrawal of materials from a library’s collection, is a necessary part of collection development, though. In</font></span><span style="color: #333333; font-family: verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: small; background-color: #ffffff;"> fact, this process could more accurately be called "de-selection." <a href="https://swonlibraries.site-ym.com/link.asp?e=oplinlist@lists.oplin.org&job=3452591&ymlink=267126530&finalurl=https%3A%2F%2Fresearchguides%2Elibrary%2Ewisc%2Eedu%2Fwomenshistoryinarchives%2Flibraries%2Darchives">A</a></span><span style="color: #333333; font-size: 1 em; font-family: verdana, arial, sans-serif; !important;"><font color="#333333" face="verdana, arial, sans-serif" size="2"><a href="https://swonlibraries.site-ym.com/link.asp?e=oplinlist@lists.oplin.org&job=3452591&ymlink=267126530&finalurl=https%3A%2F%2Fresearchguides%2Elibrary%2Ewisc%2Eedu%2Fwomenshistoryinarchives%2Flibraries%2Darchives" target="_blank">ll libraries have to do it</a> at some point, whether it's through large weeding projects or everyday decisions. </font></span><span style="color: #333333; font-size: 1 em; font-family: verdana, arial, sans-serif; !important;"><font color="#333333" face="verdana, arial, sans-serif" size="2">This task can be daunting, especially when faced with a massive collection. What should we weed? Why should we weed? How often should we weed? What criteria should we use in making these decisions? What do we do with <a href="https://swonlibraries.site-ym.com/link.asp?e=oplinlist@lists.oplin.org&job=3452591&ymlink=267126530&finalurl=http%3A%2F%2Fawfullibrarybooks%2Enet%2Fdiscard%2Dresponsibly%2F" target="_blank">materials that have been de-selected</a>? Finally, <a href="https://swonlibraries.site-ym.com/link.asp?e=oplinlist@lists.oplin.org&job=3452591&ymlink=267126530&finalurl=https%3A%2F%2Famericanlibrariesmagazine%2Eorg%2F2016%2F05%2F02%2Flibrary%2Dweeding%2Dwithout%2Dworry%2F" target="_blank">how do we talk to our patrons</a> or staff about weeding? <a href="https://swonlibraries.site-ym.com/link.asp?e=oplinlist@lists.oplin.org&job=3452591&ymlink=267126530&finalurl=https%3A%2F%2Fswonlibraries%2Esite%2Dym%2Ecom%2Fevents%2FEventDetails%2Easpx%3Fid%3D1123725" target="_blank">This September</a><a href="https://swonlibraries.site-ym.com/link.asp?e=oplinlist@lists.oplin.org&job=3452591&ymlink=267126530&finalurl=http%3A%2F%2Fswonlibraries%2Esite%2Dym%2Ecom%2Fevents%2FEventDetails%2Easpx%3Fid%3D1123725"> 6th</a>, SWON has teamed up with Sarah Geisler, Collection Services Librarian at Campbell County Public Library, to answer these questions and more in Weeding 101, <a href="https://swonlibraries.site-ym.com/link.asp?e=oplinlist@lists.oplin.org&job=3452591&ymlink=267126530&finalurl=http%3A%2F%2Fswonlibraries%2Esite%2Dym%2Ecom%2Fevents%2FEventDetails%2Easpx%3Fid%3D1123725" target="_blank">a webinar</a> discussing the best practices of weeding a public library collection.  </font></span></p>

                    <p><span style="color: #333333; font-size: 1 em; font-family: verdana, arial, sans-serif; !important;"><font color="#333333" face="verdana, arial, sans-serif" size="2">Join children’s musician and author Jim Gill along with storyteller, author and teaching artist Sherry Norfolk for a jam-packed day of interactive learning.  </font></span></p>
                    <p><span style="color: #333333; font-size: 1 em; font-family: verdana, arial, sans-serif; !important;"><font color="#333333" face="verdana, arial, sans-serif" size="2">In the morning, Jim Gill will share examples of his work and discuss how his unique creations in music inspire young children not only to move and sing, but to regulate their movements and make connections between songs and print.  Gill will share strategies to involve adults in music play as well as how to create an inclusive environment for children with special needs.  In the afternoon session, Sherry Norfolk will introduce attendees to the highly interactive art of storytelling and its applications in the public library.  Norfolk will share tips for choosing and developing age-appropriate stories, effective use of voice, body language, gesture, and facial expression as well as using oral storytelling to enliven and enrich library programming.  Attendees will leave with at least one story ready to tell.</font></span></p>
