If Road Runner can supply you with a guaranteed, static IP address, then OPLIN can make sure that it is registered with the database content providers. Otherwise, you would have to use Remote Access to get to OPLIN resources. (Or use a proxy server, as Susan Kendall seems to be thinking of doing). I'm a Road Runner user at home. Occasionally my service has been very slow, because bandwidth is shared in my neighborhood. I would want to know that I had sufficient bandwidth to run the new generation circulation systems (along with their schmancy Web catalogs), and not be disrupted when a patron tries to watch a movie trailer on-line. (Few things are more annoying than being able to type faster than your circ system can respond, right?) We were venturing into territory that was new to us so we hired a third party to install the internal connection between our branch and the main library - where Roadrunner stops their installation inside the branch. Road Runner gave us 2 static IP addresses with our Business Class SoHo Static Tier account. Connection times are supposed to be 1 mbps down and 256 kbps up. In any case MUCH faster than the 56 Kbps line we had previously been using for the 6 computers at our branch. Business Class service has priority over residential service for repairs as well but check with your representative to be sure. Bandwidth is not shared with other customers with business accounts so they can guarantee connection speeds more assuredly. We installed a VPN connection between the branch and the main library so that the traffic to the Internet looks like it is part of our main network. The following devices will be affected: BBRHOE, BBRHOF, MHCO, Access Switch 2000 and Access T-45. The outage is expected to last approximately 30 minutes. Please contact the Network Operations Center if you have any questions. Completed Maintenance: Monday, October 13, 3:00 - 6:00 a.m. (Columbus Day) ITSD Network Operations replaced a module in a core router. The maintenance window did not exceed 1 hour. ITSD Network Services "Infected Devices" Policy: With the recent increase of worms and viruses, ITSD is planning to implement an "Infected Devices" Policy. On a daily basis we determine (with Intrusion Detection Software) devices that are infected with a worm or virus. If these infected devices are not removed from the ohio.gov network, they can infect other machines. If the infected device is disrupting the ohio.gov network then the device will be restricted from accessing the network immediately. If the infected device is not affecting the ohio.gov network then we will notify the customer of the infected device and ask them to remove the device from the network. Once notified, the customer will have 24 hours to cleanse the infected device. If a customer fails to removed an infected device from the network (24 hours after they've been notified), the device will be restricted from accessing the ohio.gov network. This policy will be updated as needed to maintain ohio.gov network access. Please contact the Network Operations Center if you have any questions or concerns. __________________________________________________________ DAS Goal - DAS will leverage Ohio's investment in information technology by implementing exemplary statewide governance in collaboration with its customers. We want to thank = everyone who took the time at the Stakeholders Meeting to provide feedback to the = design team.  The general = direction is now set.  We can tell you, for = example, that the Web links directory has been largely scaled back, but = persistent navigation will continue for:

·         Research Databases

·         Discover Ohio

·         What Tree is It?

·         What’s that Snake?

·         What’s the Point?

·         OH! Kids

·         OH! Teens

·         OH! Teach

Standard Web features = such as About OPLIN, Disclaimers, Contact Us, Search, and so on will also be = retained.  Watch for additional messages = outlining not only organization and design, but database-related = improvements.

When will we be = finished?  = Our goal is January 1st, but we would rather do it right than have it = “on time” in this case.  = We will announce the final date at least 30 days in advance.

------_=_NextPart_001_01C3989E.126238AC-- From bhill@rbhayes.org Wed Oct 22 15:26:11 2003 From: bhill@rbhayes.org (Becky Hill) Date: Wed, 22 Oct 2003 10:26:11 -0400 Subject: [OPLINTECH] Organize your local dead people on the web Message-ID: <3F969383.40208@rbhayes.org> Would you like to be part of an award-winning online obituary database? The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library is applying for an LSTA grant to expand its coverage of indexed obituaries in Northwest and North Central Ohio. We currently have 16 public libraries that are entering their obituary data into the web site - remotely, from their libraries' computers. NORWELD (Northwest Ohio Library District) has recently sponsored 12 of those libraries making this a more regional collaboration than it had been previously. The web site earned an award in September for Technology Excellence from the New England Historic Genealogical Society and gets over 400,000 hits a MONTH! It is a great way to help genealogists and local historians find the people they are searching for, bringing new researchers into your libraries and helping people in other parts of the country find what you have. Many libraries have existing old card files of obituary indexes that they would like to computerize and put online or they would like to start indexing their current newspapers. Why re-invent the wheel ? The grant will pay 75% of the one-time fee charged for new libraries to add to the database ($1500) and for one year's subscription fee ($200). The participating library's share would be $425. After the first year, your library would have to commit to paying the $200 annual subscription fee to maintain the service. The initial fee will allow the libraries to use the Hayes-designed software, pay for the time it takes the Hayes staff to set up a library's newspapers in the system and for the training of each library's staff. The ongoing fee of $200 per year will help defray Hayes staff costs and web storage. Each library will be able to add their obituary information into the online database which is free for everyone on the web. If your library is interested, contact Becky Hill (bhill@rbhayes.org) for further information. The application for the grant is due by Nov.12, 2003, so time is of the essence. If approved, it would go into effect April 2004. We are currently collecting names of libraries in Northwest and North Central Ohio which would like to be considered for this partnership and we will need to include Letters of Support from each participating library. Security Update: Security Alerts, October 22, 2003 Buffer Overrun in Windows ListBox and ComboBox Controls Brett Moore of Security-Assessment.com discovered that a vulnerability = in Windows ListBox and ComboBox controls can result in the execution of arbitrary code on the system running the vulnerable control. The ListBox and ComboBox controls call a function located in the user32.dll file. A specially crafted Windows message could pass parameters to the function that the function can't correctly validate, thereby causing a buffer overrun. Microsoft has released secu= rity bulletin MS03-045, "Buffer Overrun in the ListBox and in the ComboBox Control Could Allow Code Execution (824141)," which addresses = this vulnerability, and recommends that affected users immediately apply the appropriate patch listed in the bulletin. http://www.win2000mag.com/windowssecurity/article/articleid/40585/405= 85.html For complete details about this vulnerability, be sure to visit our Web= site at the provided URL. Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability in OWA Ory Segal of Sanctum discovered that a vulnerability in Microsoft Excha= nge Server 5.5 Outlook Web Access (OWA) can result in the execution of arbitrary code on the user's system. This vulnerability st= ems from a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the way OWA performs HTML encoding in the Compose New Message form. Microsoft has released security bulletin MS03-047, "Vulnerability in Exchange Server 5.5 Outlook Web Access Could Allow Cross-Site Scripting= Attack (828489)," which addresses this vulnerability, and recommends that affected users immediately apply the appropriate patch listed in the bulletin. http://www.winnetmag.com/windowssecurity/article/articleid/40587/4058= 7.html For complete details about this vulnerability, be sure to visit our Web= site at the provided URL. From bhill@rbhayes.org Fri Oct 31 21:05:11 2003 From: bhill@rbhayes.org (Becky Hill) Date: Fri, 31 Oct 2003 16:05:11 -0500 Subject: [OPLINTECH] Online Obituary Index - redux Message-ID: <3FA2CE87.10307@rbhayes.org> Just in case you missed this the first time - we are still collecting names of libraries who might be interested in this program. Right now we are trying to partner with libraries in Northwest and North Central Ohio. Thanks Becky Hill Would you like to be part of an award-winning online obituary database? The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library is applying for an LSTA grant to expand its regional index obituaries in Northwest and North Central Ohio. Currently 16 public libraries are entering their obituary data into the web site - remotely, from their libraries' computers. NORWELD (Northwest Ohio Library District) has recently sponsored 12 of those libraries, making this a more regional collaboration than previously. Many libraries have existing card files of obituary indexes they would like to computerize and put online or they would like to start indexing their current newspapers. Why re-invent the wheel when you could simply tap into our regional index. -- Rebecca Hill Co-Head Librarian Hayes Presidential Center Spiegel Grove Fremont, OH 43420 e-mail: bhill@rbhayes.org phone: 419-332-2081, ext. 31 fax: 419-332-4952 From Vince.Corroto@das.state.oh.us Fri Oct 31 16:17:19 2003 From: Vince.Corroto@das.state.oh.us (Vince.Corroto@das.state.oh.us) Date: Fri, 31 Oct 2003 11:17:19 -0500 Subject: [OPLINTECH] Network Services Customer Update - October 31, 2003 Message-ID: Network Services Customer Update - October 31, 2003 Scheduled Maintenance: Tuesday, November 4, 3:00 - 6:00 a.m. ITSD network engineers will be upgrading the Operating System and memor= y on BBOET1 (router) at OET 2470 NorthStar Road.
