Designing With Web Standards

Workshop Overview:
----------------------------
Instructor: Scott Debney - Graphic/Web Designer, OHIONET
Date: 4/29/04
Time: 10:00:00 AM-2:30:00 PM
Location: OHIONET

Description: Have you designed a website that looks perfect in Internet
Explorer, only to discover it looks horrible in Mozilla & Netscape? Do you
create transparent pixel image spacers to make sure that the curve in your
navigation bar is just right? Do you use tables to layout your site? Do you
have a "looks best in Internet Explorer" tagline at the bottom of your site?
Do you use the <font> tag? If you answered yes to any of these questions,
then web standards is the solution for you.

This workshop is for designers, developers, library directors, and web
librarians who want their sites to cost less, work better and reach more
people.

OHIONET embraces web standards and is currently redesigning its website
using XHTML and CSS. This workshop will cover all aspects of designing with
web standards, including what to consider before you begin and problems you
may encounter along the way, such as bad browsers, proper usage of Flash,
and how to validate your site. Discussion topics will include Web standards
and authoring tools, CSS basics, DOCTYPE Switching to standards mode, how
using standards makes your site accessible to all, and standards compliant
browsers.

Scott Debney has designed many sites using web standards. Recent examples
include Carnegie Public Library's Kids' Space
http://www.cplwcho.org/KidsPage.html and OLC's Diversity Awareness and
Resources Committee's website http://www.olc.org/diversity/.

Who Should Attend: This workshop is for designers, developers, library
directors, and web librarians who want their sites to cost less, work better
and reach more people.

Prerequisite: Some HTML knowledge is preferred
