As an update, here's how we solved our problem:

For most computers (XP and 2000) we found a newer version of Symantec
LiveUpdate from their site
(http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/files/lu/lu.html), downloaded it, and
installed it. CPU speed dropped to normal and we were able to update the
virus definitions.

On the older computers (98 and NT) we had to manually uninstall the old
version of LiveUpdate in order to install the new version.

All is well in Rodman Libraryland once again. Thanks for all the good
suggestions and the news about OPLIN's plans for upcoming pricing.
