We combine this with content filetering and corporate anti-virus and have no need for any anti-spyware programs whatsoever. Microsoft will be giving this program away for free, but once the beta testing is over, you can keep the program but like anti-virus, will have to pay for the updates. I firmly believe this program is better than the Microsoft program. SpywareBlaster does not have a background scanner that will slow down the computer. Instead it changes the configuration of Internet Explorer so that it does not accept spyware/malware while you browse the Internet. It works extremely well. It will run on Windows 98, ME, 2000, and XP. And, it is available for Public Libraries (and most educational institutions and home users), according to the website, for free. Make sure you download from one of the links above. If you go to spywareblaster.com, you will get a program that is not the real SpywareBlaster, that is most likely spyware itself, and will ask you to pay. The real SpywareBlaster available from the two links above is completely free, is NOT spyware, and will never hound you to pay. Just like with an antivirus program, you need to update SpywareBlaster periodically. There is an update button to do this inside the progam. He can only get to our library when he gets off work (after 5:00) except for emergencies (like the entire system is down - and I can't handle it ) I call him with any problems that I can't handle and he walks me though them. We work well together. I am computer literate and have no problem researching and troubleshooting a problem but I am not a computer specialist with a degree. We literally have nobody else to take care of everyday troubleshooting and at times patron's would get upset because of computer problems. Somebody had to do it. I am up to learning all I can about everything you all have to offer. (-: No doubt, the spyware is a nasty problem right now. It should be illegal. After more investigation, I find that small Office documents, 50 KB and less, can be saved to a floppy without errors. Larger documents, 80 KB and more, still lock up the Office application and prevent graceful logoffs and shutdowns. Apparently the problem occurs when some resource threshold is past. I found that turning off our McAfee Antivirus allowed saving documents of all sizes with debugging on, but of course that is not an acceptable option. The suggestion from "Tom S" to replace fastfat.sys in %windir%\system32\drivers and %windir%\system32\dllcache does seem to be a solution. To my surprise, Windows permits this with the driver loaded and WFP does not protest. I have a script for replacing the file remotely, if you haven't already chosen a solution.
