I just got my first question about whether a patron is allowed to connect some other kind of USB device to our public computers (a USB hard drive). I suspect a lot of devices wouldn't work anyway without us installing drivers for the patron, but I don't have much experience with the wide array of USB devices that are out there. He can only get to our library when he gets off work (after 5:00) except for emergencies (like the entire system is down - and I can't handle it ) I call him with any problems that I can't handle and he walks me though them. We work well together. I am computer literate and have no problem researching and troubleshooting a problem but I am not a computer specialist with a degree. We literally have nobody else to take care of everyday troubleshooting and at times patron's would get upset because of computer problems. Somebody had to do it. After more investigation, I find that small Office documents, 50 KB and less, can be saved to a floppy without errors. Larger documents, 80 KB and more, still lock up the Office application and prevent graceful logoffs and shutdowns. Apparently the problem occurs when some resource threshold is past. I found that turning off our McAfee Antivirus allowed saving documents of all sizes with debugging on, but of course that is not an acceptable option. The suggestion from "Tom S" to replace fastfat.sys in %windir%\system32\drivers and %windir%\system32\dllcache does seem to be a solution. To my surprise, Windows permits this with the driver loaded and WFP does not protest. I have a script for replacing the file remotely, if you haven't already chosen a solution.
