I have been testing an online community with tagging that I have developed in-house. My library's Website is based on the Drupal open-source content management system, and with all of the available modules, Drupal can support an online community.

I handle tags a little differently, breaking them into categories (plot, character, setting, subject...). 

So far, testing is working well.  If people are interested, I intend to share this with other libraries. There are tag normalization issues to ponder, and other issues. The system isn't on a public server yet, but when it is (end-summer-ish???), I will post here.
