I concur.   We are doing exactly what you are...and its just great....and we 
did not purchase a Plasma.  We actually purchased a 42" from Walmart.

We are using just this sort of arrangement. A large, flat-panel unit
sits on a shelf behind the Circulation Desk where patrons are most
likely to have a little time to see a slide or two.

To keep it simple and save some cost, we use a home-grown system
utilizing PowerPoint to create and run a show of slides with various
announcements and a standard PC stowed in a cabinet drives the screen.
Slides stay on the screen for around five seconds before transitioning
to the next slide.

A bit of advice: The folks who purchased the large screen (using donated
funds) bought a plasma unit. Don't do that. Though they have improved,
plasma screens are still subject to image burn-in and it only took a
couple of days for our screen to show it! Purchase an LCD screen and
you'll be safer.
