[OPLINTECH] Innovative Millenium, printing and LINUX

Hello. I'm configuring a couple of test workstations, one using Ubuntu
10.04 and the other OpenSuse 11.3, both with the Gnome desktop. Everything
works fine except when trying to print from Millenium. The print job is
submitted to the printer, there's a bit of a delay, then an error message
indicating the print job failed. After doing a bit of research, it seems
there's a bug (that was never properly resolved) when printing to non
postscript printers under Java 1.6 (the version used by Millenium). It
seems the fix to this problem is to upgrade to Java 7 or to downgrade to
Java 5. Neither is an option, of course, under Millenium as the install of
Millenium includes JRE 1.6 and runs independently of any other Java version
installed on the system.

So...have any other library systems encounted this problem and if so what
was your resolution? Switching printers isn't an option at this point as we
have Epson TM88 receipt printers already in place at the circulation desks
(that are fairly new). Likewise the reference printers (HP2200's and
HP4050's, though using the Postscript driver in lieu of the PCL driver with
these likewise fails).
