[OPLINTECH] Computer Replacement Schedule

For as long as I have been doing this, I've used a 3.5 to 4 year cycle for refreshing computers. Basically year 3 to budget and year 4 to replace.
In the past several years there have been several events which have gotten us off schedule such as the Gates grant, losing Steady State, Windows 7, circulating laptops, a new ILS, and now tablets.
Before I would do a refresh plan for 2013 I'd look at some of these factors:

1. The "end of the desktop PC era in 2014." (I think the end of the desktop PC era started on Black Friday but that's just an opinion.)

2. The role of Windows 8 and "touch"

3. The impact of tablets as desktop replacements

4. The role of laptops as desktop replacements and space-saving options
In my ideal world I'm removing 2/3 of my desktop computers and replacing them with Dell (or HP)one-piece touch screens, doubling the number of laptops, and adding iPads to the mix.
Where this all gets fun is you're removing the huge computer desks and replacing them with soft furniture, upgrading your wireless, securing portable devices against theft, and a whole bunch more.
IMHO

CDW-G has the State of Ohio Purchasing Program contract and so far has been able to meet or exceed expenditure expectations.

Our un-written policy has been 'make em last', usually due to lack of money.

One thing to consider for your policy is the general PC construction.
Basically, consumer grade or enterprise grade and off the shelf or customized.
This may help determine the replacement schedule.

When we purchased PC's, we buy custom units designed for our needs to maximizes their life.

Level 9 Networks provided the last two major purchases.

Some things they provided:
PC's optimized for speed, use, service, price, etc.
Usually a small footprint case.
Some with SSD drives, others enterprise grade hard drives.
With or without DVD's, depending on use.
LCD screens may have built in sound, depending on use.
Dual screens for certain staff PC's.

Various software installed on one staff and one patron PC then imaged to others.

Hello all,

My Board is looking into adopting a computer replacement schedule, and I was wondering if any of you had some sample policies out there. They are looking at roughly a 5 year rotation period. Any information you can give would be helpful.

Thanks in advance!
