[OPLINTECH] DeepFreeze and Windows Update Loop

Here are the steps from Faronics.  I had to do this to a machine last week. It works but you have to reinstall the Deep Freeze again after you are done.

This is Faronics Technical Support Team and I am contacting you in reference to the our chat conversation about Deep Freeze issue.

Here are the removal instructions for Deep Freeze.

1) Download the appropriate version of the driver depending on your Operating System and extract it to a USB drive.

Both 32 bit and 64 bit driver links are listed below:

For All 32 bit OS's here is the link:

(The 'deepfrz.sys' file should be 20KB when extracted)

For All 64bit OS's here is the link:
http://www.faronics.com/download.php?p=XNJ
(The 'deepfrz.sys' file should be 23KB when extracted)

Please find the attached file DfDiskLo.zip.rename. Please rename the attachment from "DfDiskLo.zip.rename" to "DfDiskLo.zip". Extract the files under DfDiskLo.zip. This will have the DfDiskLox86.sys and DfDiskLox64.sys files. Please choose the correct file as per your operating system configuration and then rename it to DfDiskLo.sys Please see, this is Case Sensitive and has to be similar to "DfDiskLo.sys".

If using a USB flash drive for Windows 2000/XP, make sure the USB flash drive is attached to the machine when you start up so that the bootloader can detect it and install the correct drivers.

For Windows XP Machines:

2) Boot the workstation from a Windows XP install CD-ROM and enter into the Recovery Console. The Recovery Console can be accessed by selecting option 'R' at the welcome screen that appears after the system has finished loading Windows setup from the CD-ROM.

3) You will be prompted to Choose your Windows installation which is typically '1'.

4) You will be prompted for your local Windows Administrator password for the machine enter it or leave it blank by hitting the spacebar if there is no password.

For Windows Vista/7 Machines:

2) Boot the workstation from a Windows Vista/7 install CD-ROM and enter into the Recovery Console.
(NOTE: the Windows 7 recovery console can also be accessed by pressing F8 while the machine is booting up) The Recovery Console can be accessed by selecting option 'Repair your computer' after the opening screen where you select your language.

3) You will be prompted to Choose your Windows installation (note that this will tell you the system drive letter). The easiest way to find the OS drive is by running the following command in the Windows Recovery Console command prompt: 
bcdedit | find "osdevice"

4) Select 'Command Prompt' from the list of utilities.

5a) Copy the file from the USB flash drive to the Hard drive as stated below.

A sample command is:

'copy F:\DeepFrz.sys C:\Windows\System32\Drivers'
F:\DeepFrz.sys - this is where the Deep Freeze file is located on your F: drive which is your USB flash drive C:\Windows\System32\Drivers - this is where your Windows installation directory is located

You will be prompted to overwrite the file. Choose 'Y' for yes to overwrite. If the overwrite is successful, you will have the following response:
"1 file(s) copied."

5b) After copying the DeepFrz.sys, please copy DfDiskLo.sys to the System32/Drivers folder. The syntax should be

'copy F:\DfDiskLo.sys C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\'
F:\DfDiskLo.sys - this is where the Deep Freeze file is located on your F: drive which is your USB flash drive C:\Windows\System32\Drivers - this is where your Windows installation directory is located


6) When the file is copied into the directory you should be able to reboot the computer and gain access to the system.

!!!IMPORTANT NOTE: For any x64 Operating System, 'Disable Driver Signature Enforcement' must be enabled by selecting the appropriate option under the Advanced Boot Options (F8 prior to the start of Windows).!!

7) Once the computer has booted you should be able to uninstall and reinstall Deep Freeze (if necessary).

Oh yes indeed... ugh. I have used this tip for restoring the registry to a previous state, nullifying the partially applied updates that created the loop; it's a bit heavy-handed, but it always works.

overy.html I've also had trouble with Faronics support, in the past; they were very courteous, but the instructions they provided for dealing with a version upgrade problem actually made the issue worse, after which I solved it myself.

Has anyone had to deal with DeepFreeze rebooting in frozen state before windows updates have finished which causes an endless reboot.  I cannot thaw from the console or the client.  Safe mode makes no difference as it cannot boot to that point.  Supposedly, Faronics has a procedure for this, but have yet to email it to me.  Meanwhile, I have a bank of computers I would like to get up and running.  If anyone has dealt with this and has the "procedure" I would greatly appreciate it if you could send it to me.
