[OPLINTECH] New OPLIN network equipment

Currently there is an OPLIN Juniper router located in one library in almost
every library system in Ohio. These routers connect the libraries to the
OPLIN network core and are reaching an age when OPLIN will no longer be
able to get security updates and patches from the manufacturer. These
routers form the boundary of the OPLIN network – we have no control over
any devices on the library side of the routers – and it is our
responsibility to provide and maintain them.

Therefore, OPLIN has issued a purchase order to replace these routers with
new devices. As with most things related to technology, the new routers are
more powerful than the old ones, yet most are also much smaller – and
they're no longer called "routers." About 80% of libraries will be
receiving Juniper SRX300 service gateways. These devices measure about 12½
x 7½ x 1½ inches and have an external power supply and no fan, so they are
silent. Larger libraries will receive Juniper EX4300 switches, which fit in
one rack unit (1U).

The process of purchasing and replacing all of these new network devices
will be time-consuming. The new devices will be delivered to us, after
which they will be configured and prepared for deployment, all of which is
likely to require several months. Details of transport to the libraries and
installation have not yet been determined, but we will be in touch with
individual libraries and work out those details when we are ready to swap
the old routers for these new devices. If all goes smoothly, all of the new
devices should be in place by late summer.
