[OPLINTECH] Windows update

We noticed this issue with Windows 7 machines as well. Seeing the amount of people who have noticed really makes me think Microsoft is crippling their update services for Windows 7, likely in favor of a Windows 10 push.

I just ran into this yesterday afternoon too at one of my libraries. After several hours, I aborted and didn't fully investigate the issue because we're replacing the computers in about two months anyway and I was only trying to make a very minimal effort into fixing a few issues in order to keep them usable for the next couple of months. I didn't want to waste a lot of time (money) on them.

As part of the minimal effort, however, I had run a script I have that fully resets the Windows Update subsystem. That almost always clears up any and all Windows Update issues. But it this case, it didn't seem to help on four of the five Win7 Pro computers I was working on. I just figured it was just part of the garbage that had started to cripple the computers in the first place. Didn't realize that it was a recent common Thing until Kevin mentioned it!

In reviewing the MS KB, my script is just the "Manually reset Windows Update components" section...in automated form. So I guess my response would be: The KB Ken mentioned didn't help in my case.

The reason I created the script in the first place, though, is that I've run into this issue occasionally over the years and I use the script as an easy/complete fix. (It often also has the benefit of freeing up several GB of storage space, if you're really tight on space.)

I just went through this with some lap computers. I ran the tool from Microsoft to fix it https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058. After I ran the tool on the shutdown button was the advisor that Windows updates were pending. After it installed those updates, it found and installed updates normally from the control panel.

Is anyone else having issues with Windows updates? We have Lab computers that I have to manually check for Windows updates and they will stay on Checking for updates for 4-5 hours. They are all Windows 7 computers. I have checked all the KB articles that seem to help others and those patches have already been installed. I have also tried the Windows update repair and deleted the Windows update folders but nothing seems to work.

Does anybody have any ideas? Maybe Microsoft is trying to push people to Windows 10.
