Hi Garry,

We use Libki, an open source kiosk management software, to regulate reservation, sign in, and session time for our patron computers.

Libki is a light-weight client-server solution that’s free, and was developed and released by a library IT staffer. It’s under active development, so it gets new releases and features regularly. It handles client-server communication over a single TCP port. You can make the reservation interface available on the public internet, if that’s a feature you want.

I run the server on a Debian VM, and it manages 50 Win7Pro public computers at 4 physical library branches. It is compatible with Win10. You can use it in conjunction with your ILS patron database via SIP2, or you can have a completely separate database in Libki for patron auth. We use Libki with our patron database in SirsiDynix Symphony, and also provide guest passes. Staff can manage Libki and provide assistance via a web interface. Patrons use their library card (or other value that you choose) to log on to a computer and start a timed session. I’ve been extremely happy with it, and we’ve used it for about a year and a half. There’s an active Libki listserv for community support, and getting questions answered while setting up your server.
