[OPLINTECH] Windows 10 calculator issue

I'm not sure if it's related, but we had 2 newer windows 10 stations refuse to allow access to the Start menu within a few days of each other. The only common denominator seemed to me to be that they had recently installed an update.

I ended up having to reinstall Windows while keeping files. I had to reinstall chrome, office, and our circ software, but it did fix the issue.

Since it is a Calculator issue tied to a specific user I would guess it's a GPO issue. Do you have
"Disable all apps from Windows Store" enabled for that user?

Subject: [OPLINTECH] Windows 10 calculator issue

We’re dealing with an issue on a couple of our Circulation computers that has us scratching our heads. Hoping someone has run across this in the past and has a solution. On two of our Circulation computers, when Circ is logged in and tries to open the calculator, the calculator momentarily opens up but then closes. If I log in as another user, the calculator works fine. There is one other computer in Circ that is working perfectly fine. Logged in as Circ, the calculator opens without a hitch. I deleted the circ user profile and logged back in to load a fresh profile but the problem remains. The problem seems to be tied to only this user login on these two computers. I removed and re-installed the calculator but still the problem persists. Any ideas?

Depending on your setup, if your config doesn't actually create a brand new local user profile, then my first guess would be maybe a user registry setting that persists and is goobering up calculator. Surprising problems, though. Calc is such a simple program. Don't think I've ever run into any problems with it in any version of Windows!

An oddball, left-field cause of weirdness like this (assuming it isn't a bug introduced by Microsoft itself...most likely!) is sometimes simply malware. Probably not what's going on in your case, but something to keep in the back of your mind.

Good luck!

Hi Jim,

I have had this same problem before with the Windows Photo Viewer program. I couldn't fix it so I installed an off brand image viewer as default. I don't think it has anything to do with malware, but I suspect a Microsoft update caused the issue so I hope a future update will fix it. You could probably re-image the computer and load the profile fresh.
