Library is celebrating its 100th year of providing library service to London and
the surrounding communities on Sunday, January 23 at 1:30 pm. This historical
moment in the Library's life will be commemorated with an opening
ceremony including the Library Board and state and local

patrons will be invited to enjoy food, live music, youth activities and a visit
to the gift center where there's something free for everyone.

honored to have author and historian, Mary Ellen Armentrout, at 2:30 pm in a
special presentation talking about Carnegie libraries in Ohio. Patrons
will also have a chance to see a special display of library artifacts
hosted by Armentrout. (Display will be available to other libraries in the

January 27, 1902, Sallie Dooris, a member of the Woman’s Club, was petitioned by
her fellow members to write a letter to philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie, to
request assistance in building a public library in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1
ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:City
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">London</st1:place></st1:City>. <?xml:namespace
prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"
/><o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>

public announcement was made on February 10, 1902, that Mr. Carnegie agreed to
donate $10,000 for the establishment of a new public library
building.<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>

size=2> </FONT></o:p></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face=Arial><FONT size=2>The
Library was built on the corner of E. First and<SPAN class=406432715-07012005>
</SPAN>S. Union Streets in the downtown area. <o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>

Library was formally opened on January 18, 1905. Four hundred local spectators
were present at the opening ceremony and over 416 books were donated by
community members to help fill the new building.<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>
