thank you to all who responded to my questions regarding
gadgets in libraries a couple of weeks ago! As some of you guessed, I
plan to incorporate at least some of the
results into my forthcoming presentation on gadgets at the OLC Support
Staff conference. I will be collating and releasing the (informal)
results around the end of September via both OPLINTECH and OPLINLIST
and also through the OPLIN web site. <br>

I'm now interested in your ideas about how to hire a good tech for a
public library (if your library hires any, of course). This is for an
upcoming post on "What Does This Mean to Me, Laura?" (<a
moz-do-not-send="true" href="http://www.oplin.org/meanlaura">http://www.oplin.org/meanlaura</a>)<br>
<br>
I am defining "tech" here rather broadly, as someone who's job is <i>primarily
</i>related (although it does not have to be <i>entirely</i>
related)
to maintaining a library's computers, network and/or web site(s).
Please answer as many of the following as you can manage:<br>
<br>
1. What qualities do you MOST seek in a tech candidate?<br>
2. What quality/qualities are immediate turn offs?<br>
3. Does your library prefer/require candidates with degrees in
computer science (or a job-related degree)?<br>
4. Does your library prefer/require candidates with at least one
professional certification (e.g., A+, MCSE, CIW, etc)<br>
5. Does your library require applicants to pass a written job skills
exam as part of the hiring process?<br>
6. Which avenues/web sites does your library use to advertise tech job
openings? <br>
7. What is the hardest thing about hiring a tech?<br>
8. What advice would you give to another library trying to hire a good
tech?<br>
<br>
I truly appreciate your responses!<br>
