Thanks Jim and Dan,<br><br>I mainly threw out the question because I am trying to streamline our network and I am questioning the need for AD if I could just get by with something (preferably open source) that serves the same purpose or who knows, maybe even nothing at all.<br>
<br>But you guys also bring up another good reason for the discussion and that is as Jim suggests, I seriously need to try to decide how best to manage and control our printing costs moving forward, so maybe the need for central management is here to stay.<br>
<br>Any others care to weigh in their experiences?<br><br clear="all">Eric Maynard<br>Head of Information Technology,<br>Holmes County District Public Library<br>Millersburg, OH 44654<br><br>Email [<a href="mailto:emaynard@holmeslib.org">emaynard@holmeslib.org</a>]<br>

a lot of networked printers but we have several color copiers that can be used
for our Admin staff to print to. We use a Windows Print server and share them.
We set up access security via the security properties tab and create

mandatory profiles and only admins can install printers on the
workstation. We install the networked printers on workstations for our

<p style="margin-bottom: 12pt;">I am curious how other
techs/admins deal with managing networked printers ? Does anyone use
Active Directory to make these "discoverable" via the Windows Add
Printer wizard? <br>
<br>
If not, how do you manage these from a staff perspective? Windows shares?
direct to printer? Automated scripts or manual installation?<br>
