But when I was still at Mettler Toledo they used VMware.<br>
This was probably around 1996<br>
I bought VMware Workstation and used it on my work laptop, while
contracting back to M-T<br>

In 2003 we bought an academic version 3.2 for the library. Later a free
upgrade to 4.0<br>
<br>
Over the years VMware improved their products and began offering free
versions, such as VMware Player.<br>
Many pre-built virtual machines started to become available.<br>
NIMA is one I mention every so often.<br>
<br>
At some point they offered VMware Server 1 then 2 so it was natural to
upgrade.<br>
Then came the free ESXi so again it seemed an obvious upgrade<br>
(Free is good)<br>
<br>
The product has been very stable, we have used it for many years with
excellent results.<br>
The company has been around for years, has 7,100 employees, stock is
towards 'strong buy'.<br>
<br>
And I don't know anything about the Ubuntu Version. Didn't even know it
was available<br>
<br>
Oh yes, I think Chad learned about VMware from me, way back when. :)<br>

System was a beefed up Windows 64bit server running VMware to manage 7<br>
to 9 virtual servers.<br>
As part of an upgrade, Windows was to be replaced by ESXi (free version)<br>

Last weekend Chad (Level 9 Networks) began the server upgrade.<br>
Short version:<br>
Backed up everything<br>
Broke the existing raid into 2 pairs of mirrored drives<br>
Added a 2TB drive (1 more still to add)<br>
Reformatted main drives, installed ESXi<br>
Restored the virtual servers<br>
<br>
System performance has noticeably improved !!<br>
Some examples:<br>
Backup to tape shaved 30 minutes of the circulation server backup<br>
openSUSE Education (children's dept.) thin clients response greatly<br>
improved<br>
External response from our websites and PAC greatly improved. Internal<br>
too, of course.<br>
vSphere client to manage the virtual machines has some nicer features<br>
<br>
Probably the main reason for improvement was removing the Windows
overhead.<br>
ESXi is dedicated to run virtual machines, Windows is not.<br>
Changing the raid may have contributed also<br>
<br>
There are just a few items left to complete in this phase before we<br>
continue to the next.<br>
