We have 4 AWEs up and running. So far the only problem I've had was someone jammed the power button into the side of the case. AWE fixed that for us. They are all-in-ones with touchscreens. There is a good range of software. We do have to find better headphones because the kids keep destroying them.
I've always _highly_ recommended the AWE Early Literacy Station ever

since I first saw it years ago when one of my libraries purchased one
with money from a small grant.

http://www.awelearning.com/en/markets/libraries/in-the-library/the-early-literacy-station/

They're an excellent set-it-up-and-forget-about-it solution and the kids
(and parents) absolutely LOVE them. I used to try to put together a
solution like that myself, but once these came along, I stopped. I
couldn't do nearly as good a job as AWE has. Worth every penny and then
some.

They're also perfect for small grants/gifts from local businesses.
Dear Folks,

The Childrens Departments provides a workstation for young readers
that is configured with a few software titles that encourage reading
skills. The system is aging, as are the programs that run there.

I have shown the Department Staff the alternative (free open source
software) QIMO. http://www.qimo4kids.com This has piqued their
interest. Wondering if there are "literacy" specific systems? I
found Kiddix and doudou (sp?) when I searched...

Has anyone built a "really cool" literacy oriented "kid" system? As
with any public facing system, the less maintenance / interventions
the better.
