I'm with just about everyone else. I usually recommend the AWE ELS computers. Kids just eat 'em up! Years ago I had started building my own version of them kind of along the lines of the ELS computers. That stopped as soon as I discovered the AWE ELS computers, though. AWE does a much, much better job at it and for all the titles they have in the computers, it's a pretty good deal.

I usually suggest that these computers are perfect for small local grant money. A single small local donor can often reasonably fund one of them and it provides a big "bang for their buck", which the donors like.

The other options, as Jim mentioned, are also good if, as a local IT person, you have some spare time to develop the solution. Many of my own libraries don't have local techs, though, so AWE provides a turn-key solution that is much more economical than paying me to do it (plus they have a much better interface for the kids than one I'd provide).

In the interest of full disclosure, GCPL has had some 20 AWE computers for several years.
If money was no object, I won't consider any other solution.
My grandkids love "abbey mouse" and I've distributed about a thousand computers with the Zac browser to schools or disabled kids.
But the beauty of this discussion is that there are now:
1. The spend money turn-key option aka AWE
2. The slight learning curve options aka ABC Mouse or Linux
3. The familiar solution aka Win 7, Deep Freeze and a kid's browser

How cool is that?
We use the AWE's here as well. Ours have touch screens which is a nice feature. Also no internet access. It doesn't take a lot of time to get them up and running.
