<div dir="ltr">Maybe I should clarify what I meant. DF is in a class by itself. SteadyState didn't quite do what DF does. DF works at a much lower level in the operating system, allowing you to do all sorts of nasty stuff, including a full format of the hard drive. SS was just an "ugly step-sister". Aside from DF, the next closest thing to it would be a virtual machine that discards changes to the virtual hard drive. This Drive Vaccine on the surface looks to be a little closer to what DF does. That's the novelty here.<div><br></div><div>Regarding the demise of SS and the need for a DF/SS/DV product...you could very well be right...I haven't really got a clue.</div><div><br></div><div>Regarding group policy and locking down the computers...That's exactly how I used to do the patron computers years ago. I started relaxing the restrictions on the patron computers to allow them to do more when DF showed up on the scene. Now I use DF as the ultimate backstop and lightly restrict the patron computers with Group Policies. Whenever a patron hits a website that needs a special plugin or has a need to do something else I haven't already provided for, my answer is something like: "Try it. If it works, great! the reason why DP is the only name in the game, is there isn’t a “huge” need for it. We dropped DF a few years ago and just opted to lock down the PC’s via GPO’s. We block anything from being executed, restrict the all drives minus T:, and created a T: VHD
that loads on startup. Every morning the T: drive gets wiped since it’s not persistent.
