Hello,

You may have seen that the Title II ADA compliance deadlines were extended yesterday in the Federal Register. It is easy to read that and feel like there is more time to relax, but this is not really a time to pause.

Public libraries are built on the idea that everyone should be able to access information and services. That does not change because a deadline moved. When websites, databases, or digital content are not accessible, some people are effectively shut out. That goes directly against the mission libraries work hard to uphold.

It is also important to keep in mind that the legal obligations have not gone away. Even with new deadlines, people can still file complaints with the Department of Justice if they encounter accessibility barriers. The expectation to provide accessible services is still in place today.

There is also a practical side. Accessibility work takes time. It is rarely a quick fix and remains an ongoing part of maintaining online resources. Waiting until the last minute usually creates more work, more stress, and higher costs. Continuing now makes the process more manageable and leads to better results.

So while the updated timeline gives some flexibility, it should not be seen as a reason to hold off. Making progress now helps ensure your library’s services are usable and welcoming for everyone.

Thank you,

Laura

--
Laura Solomon, CPAAC, MCIW, MLS (She/her)
