Lloyd Library and Museum Announces a Grand Opening Celebration
Saturday, March 10, 2007 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Lloyd Library and Museum will commemorate several momentous events on Saturday, March 10, 2007 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at its Grand Opening. Please join us as we celebrate: 1) the Library's updated, colorful, and inspired new look following a complete renovation of the first floor; 2) the discovery and verification that a volume once owned by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Dominique Chabrey's 1678 Omnium Stirpium Sciagraphia et Icones, has been in the Lloyd collection since at least 1893; and, 3) the Lloyd's first exhibition of contemporary botanical art in the newly remodeled conference room.
The celebration will include lectures, gallery talks, special guests, exhibitions, and a delicious array of hors d'oeuvres and wines.
Our featured book exhibition will be "In Rousseau's Own Hand: His Book, His Notes, and Botany." It will display the Chabrey once owned and annotated by Rousseau, as well as a remarkable number of other botanical books from the Lloyd collection-titles known to have been in Rousseau's library at the time of his death, though not his copies. Two lectures will complement this exhibition. Pierre Sotteau, Professor Emeritus of Miami University will speak on Rousseau's copy of Chabrey; and, Rousseau expert, Takuya Kobayashi of the University of Neuchâtel in Switzerland who verified the ownership of the book, will speak on Rousseau and botany, showing images of eight botanical books verified as having belonged to Rousseau along with some of Rousseau's herbaria specimens.
The Lloyd's first exhibition of contemporary botanical art will feature works from the renowned Harper's Studio of Cincinnati. Artists Charley, Edith, and Brett Harper will all have pieces on display in the exhibition. Brett Harper will be available for gallery talks after the Rousseau lectures.
This event promises to be one of the finest and most significant ever to be held at the Lloyd. The celebration will also be the manifestation of Lloyd's new tagline, actually Bringing Science, Art and History to Life! For more information about the Lloyd Library and Museum, see below.
The Lloyd Library and Museum, located at 917 Plum Street, downtown Cincinnati, is a local and regional treasure. The library was developed in the nineteenth century by the Lloyd brothers-John Uri, Curtis Gates, and Nelson Ashley to provide reference sources for Lloyd Brothers Pharmacists, Inc., one of the leading pharmaceutical companies of the period. Today the library is recognized worldwide by the scientific community as a vital research center. The library holds, acquires, and provides access to both historic and current materials on the subjects of pharmacy, botany, horticulture, herbal and alternative medicine, pharmacognosy, and related topics. Although our collections have a scientific focus, they also have relevance to humanities topics, such as visual arts and foreign languages through resources that feature botanical and natural history illustrations, original artworks, and travel literature, thereby revealing the convergence of science and art. The Lloyd is open to anyone with an interest in these topics. Free parking is available for patrons and visitors behind the library building.
