[SOA] OHS State Archives Workshops

The State Archives Department at the Ohio Historical Society is pleased
to announce our two upcoming spring workshops.  Please feel free to
forward this information to any interested parties.

 

"Concepts in Records Management for Local Governments" will be held on
March 21st from 10AM-3PM at the Ohio Historical Center.  This workshop
is an introductory course aimed at local governments on county,
municipal, and township levels, as well as, schools, libraries, and
special districts.  Although this is a local government based workshop,
students and archivists who are interested in government archives would
benefit from this event.

 

The presentation will be split into two sections:

 

"Just the Basics" will introduce records-keepers to the records
management practices in Ohio, including the procedures for creating
records retention schedules and filing certificates of disposal with the
State Archives.  Activities will be used to reinforce the lessons
presented.  

 

"Electronic Records" will focus on how the general procedures discussed
in "Just the Basics" apply to the increasing numbers of electronic
records being created or received by local governments.  It will
highlight key things to consider when maintaining electronic records.

"Vital Records & Disaster Preparedness" will be held on May 1st from
9AM-4PM at the Ohio Historical Center in conjunction with May Day, an
initiative charged by the Society of American Archivists to preserve
archival resources. 

 

This workshop is presented in two sections:

 

"Vital Records" will introduce the skills and knowledge required to
identify, protect and make readily available the vital records needed to
support the resumption of essential business functions after a disaster
and to establish a vital records program.  

 

"Disaster Preparedness" will address many common types of disasters that
affect records in Ohio, discuss the preparation of a disaster
preparedness plan, and provide basic instructions for recovering records
in the event disaster strikes.
