Dear Librarians and Archivists:
Each year, hundreds of students across the state travel to Columbus in
late spring to compete in Ohio History Day. National History Day in
Ohio is a yearlong program where students choose a topic, tied to the
annual theme, and create historical papers, dramatic performances,
creative documentaries, museum-like exhibits and websites. Their
projects are based in primary and secondary source research and reflect
their analysis of the historical topic.
The 2009 National History Day theme is "The Individual in History:
Actions and Legacies." Ohio History Day is April 25, 2009 at Columbus
State Community College. Over 600 students in grades 6-12 will compete
to earn scholarships, special awards and ultimately a chance to
represent Ohio at the national event. The top two projects in each
category will move on to National History Day in College Park, MD. For
the many students that do not move on, the valuable comments they
receive from judges are the most important thing they will take home.
The Ohio Historical Society, which sponsors National History Day in
Ohio, is looking for willing individuals to serve as judges at the 2009
Ohio History Day. Judging is the keystone of the program, providing an
interaction with professionals and feedback on their work. The day
starts at 8 am with continental breakfast and a training orientation.
Judging concludes around noon and judges are provided with lunch while
they fill out their evaluation forms and determine the top projects.
If you would be willing to judge, please fill out the attached form. We
will send you additional information as Ohio History Day approaches.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions, or browse the website
