Society of Ohio Archivists Fall Workshops 2010



The Society of Ohio Archivists (SOA) announces the annual Fall Workshop to
be held on October 8, 2010.  Two workshops will be offered; a morning
session on digital projects and an afternoon session on copyright.
Participants
can choose to attend either the morning or the afternoon session OR register
for both sessions for one fee.  Registration form available at

This workshop covers:

* Planning a digital project

* Online access options

* Digital Preservation

Participants will come away from the workshop with a broad knowledge of the
components of a digitization project, as well as general plan for a digital
project.

*Afternoon Session Title: *Navigating through the Copyright Maze for your
Library, Museum, and Digital Projects**



*Afternoon Session Description:*

This will be a mini course on what you need to know to navigate through the
copyright laws for your library or museum.  You will learn the basics of
copyright law, as well as library and museum rights to copy and preserve
copyrighted materials and how you can legally share these materials with
others.  Complying with copyright law for your digital projects will also be
discussed, including when to get permission for use, documents needed from
owners and donors, what records to keep, copyright notices needed on
websites, dealing with orphan works, and where to get copyright-free
material for use in your institution's website or digital project.



*Presented by: *Michelle Deis is the owner of Inspire Information Services,
LLC, which provides copyright services to academic institutions, libraries,
and other nonprofit organizations.  Michelle also provides copyright
training to academic and library groups.  She has helped these institutions
develop copyright policies, procedures, notices, and forms, and has worked
with them to ensure their website and digital projects are compliant with
copyright law.  Michelle was formerly Head of the Ohio State University
Health Sciences Copyright Management Office.  She has been a practicing
attorney, a law librarian, and she has taught legal and communications
classes at Capital University Law School and Columbus State Community
College.  She has a law degree from The Ohio State University and a Master's
in Library and Information Science from Kent State University.**
