Society of Indiana Archivists Fall Workshop

The Society of Indiana Archivists invites you to join us for our Fall Workshop, “Celebrate Archives Month – Civil War Outreach and More”

When: Friday October 8, 2010: 10:00 AM-4 PM
Where: Allen County Public Library, Fort Wayne Indiana

Cost: $30 for members, $40 for non-members

Our Workshop will focus on how to use your Civil War materials—including photographs, manuscripts, and material objects—to promote American Archives Month.

Joan Hostetler will engage attendees in methods of identifying and preserving Civil War era images and formats, as well as presenting a history of photographic studios in Indiana during the 1860s.

Dan Bays will discuss his efforts at outreach as the Harrison County Historian and how to effectively use archival materials as an integral part of promoting your collections.

The day features two tours of outstanding collections.  Jane Gastineau will give us an inside look at the Lincoln Collection, one of the best collections of Lincoln material in the United States. We are also fortunate to have Curt Witcher to give us a tour of the Genealogy Center, which is second only in holdings to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.

Schedule:

9:30 a.m. Registration and coffee.

10:00 a.m. Welcome by SIA Leadership and SIA Fall Workshop Committee.

10:30 a.m. Tour of the Genealogy Center and Talk by Curt Witcher about the Center’s resources, as well as the Center’s widespread assistance to researchers all over the world.

11:00 a.m. Break for morning snacks.

11:15 a.m. Session: Dan Bays, Outreach and Promotion

12:00 p.m. Lunch on Your Own.

1:00 p.m. Session: Joan Hostetler, Photograph Preservation

1:45 p.m. Tour of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection at Allen County Public Library and Talk by Jane Gastineau. Ms. Gastineau will discuss this nationally known collection and how it has recently come to the Allen County Public Library. She will show some of the most interesting and unusual items in the collection related to Lincoln specifically and to the Civil War more generally.

3:00 p.m. Break for afternoon snacks.

3:15 p.m. Wrap-up.
