PREPARING FOR THE UNEXPECTED:
DISASTER PLANNING FOR CULTURAL COLLECTIONS
Presented by the Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts
CHICAGO, IL - MAY 3, 2011
Hosted by:
The Newberry Library
Cosponsored by:
Chicago Area Conservation Group (CACG)
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Collecting institutions have a responsibility to preserve their collections for future generations, yet an unanticipated emergency can put these collections at risk. Planning for the unexpected, from large scale emergencies to damage from leaks, pest infestations, mold, theft or fire, allows institutions of any size or budget to identify risks and mitigate damage to collections, preventing emergencies from becoming disasters.
This one-day program will address:
* Assessing vulnerabilities
* Disaster planning
* Crisis communication
* Evaluating and mitigating risks to staff and collections
* Prioritizing collections
* Working with first responders before disaster strikes
In addition, there will be a disaster scenario exercise and an interactive session on the "exercising" of disaster plans and staff training.
This program is intended for staff charged with collections care, including executive directors, librarians, archivists, curators, collections managers, conservators, stewards of historic house museums, and for staff responsible for the safety of collections, buildings, and the people who use them, such as site, security and facility managers.
To encourage institutions to register staff involved in both collections care and safety, CCAHA is offering a reduced registration fee to a second participant from the same institution.
