Assistant, 

Ohio Historical Society (Columbus, Ohio)

 

The Ohio Historical Society, located in Columbus, Ohio, seeks a
candidate for multi-faceted position within the Museum and Library
Services Division.  The candidate will serve as the Quality Control
Technician for the National Digital Newspaper Program in Ohio as well as
an Electronic Records Assistant in the State Archives.  This position
will also require providing public service in the Archives/Library.
Essential duties and responsibilities include: 

 

*	Performing quality assurance on images, metadata, OCR and other
deliverables for a newspaper digitization project. 
*	Creating documentation for newspaper digitization project.
*	Preparing materials for the newspaper project's advisory board.
*	Assisting with tracking, presenting, and reporting of microfilm
selection data and digital deliverables 
*	Assisting with preparation of microfilm for newspaper
digitization project.
*	Digitization of local government record materials. 
*	Assisting with review of records retention and disposition
schedules for local government records. 

*         Assisting with electronic records workshops. 

*	In cooperation with the Unit Manager for Digital Services,
working to establish and implement program policies, goals and
objectives of the electronic records program.
*	Assisting patrons in public areas, assisting with museum and
library collections activities including circulation, processing,
inventory, shelf reading and collection tracking.   
*	Other duties as assigned.

 

Candidates should have an associate's degree in history, library or
information science or a related discipline or equivalent related
experience, plus one to three years experience with digitization
projects. Equally important are strong communication and presentation
skills, organizational ability and willingness to embrace innovation and
change. Experience and a solid understanding of digitization and/or
microfilm conversion projects; microfilm procedures; metadata standards;
and principles governing standards in digital libraries required.
Previous customer service experience within a professional office
setting required.  Schedule will include working some Saturdays.   

  

This position is partially funded by a National Endowment for the
Humanities (NEH) grant to the Ohio Historical Society to continue
digitization of Ohio's microfilmed newspapers. The Ohio Newspaper
Digitization Project, a part of the National Digital Newspaper Program
developed by NEH and the Library of Congress, will digitize 100,000 Ohio
newspaper pages between the years of 1836 and 1922 during the two-year
grant period. Newspapers digitized as part of the grant award will be
included in the Library of Congress' Chronicling America database at
