The National Archives recently launched the Founders Online website [http://founders.archives.gov/]. This free online tool brings together the papers of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison in a single website that gives a first-hand account of the growth of democracy and the birth of the Republic. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture has announced that Oprah Winfrey will donate $12 million to support the capital campaign of the new museum. Combined with her $1 million gift in 2007, this brings Winfrey’s total contribution to $13 million, the museum’s largest donation to date. The National Park Service recently awarded more than $3.3 million in grants to help preserve more than 200 acres of land at five of America’s Civil War battlefields. The grant projects are at the Ball’s Bluff (Va.), Brandy Station (Va.), Chickamauga (Ga.), First Deep Bottom (Va.) and Second Manassas (Va.) battlefields. The National Park Service recently awarded $21.6 million in historic preservation grants to help states and territories preserve and protect historic sites. Also, more $3.7 million was distributed to Tribal Historic Preservation Offices to help American Indian tribes in carrying out national historic preservation program responsibilities on tribal lands.
